Okay...here we go again.  I was getting ready this morning and my deodorant fell out of the container and onto the floor.  Porky raced over and took a small bite of it!       I can't get ahold of the vet to ask what to do, anybody know if it will hurt him?   He seems fine and he didn't eat hardly any of it.   If I just would have shut the door and kept him out of the bathroom it never would have happened!   Please help if any of you know what to do.

I am not sure about that one, call the vet, if you can't get yours just go through the yellow pages and call each one til you find one that is open, and ask them over the phone what to do. If he only got a little bit he's probably ok but I wouldn't chance it. Why do these things always have to happen on a holiday.

If you can't find a vet open, you can take a syringe and put a few MLs of peroxide in it and force feed it to Porky.  It'll make him puke, and the deodorant is soft enough to come back up.

My vet always tells me to have peroxide in hand just in case when you have dogs in the house.

Thanks Dee Dee and Kathleen.   I did the peroxide trick right away after Porky ingested the deodorant and then tried calling the vet.  I got no answer at any of their numbers so, I just took him to the animal hospital.   I figured he'd be okay after puking all of the stuff up, but wanted to make sure.   They said he should be fine but to watch and see if he gets an upset tummy or loose stools.   They also told me it was most likely, not a big deal since he didn't eat much of it.  Had he eaten the whole stick, however, it would have been bad.

dis is Parker: yous only to eat doggie food. You can get really sick and have to stay at the hospital. That's what happened to me once. You won't like the hospital, they make you stay in cwates an thats no fun. Porkie Pie: yous need to be a good boy like me!

Thanks Leslie!  I actually knew of that phone number, but it was in my address book, which is packed away in our storage unit.   :doah:   Hopefully we won't ever need it again!   I am going to program it into my cell so I'll always have it from now on.  The vet actually had to call them to see what they thought.

Porky, you sure are sumptin.  Hope your tummy is A-OK.

Porky your Momma needs to teach you the Leave it command is very helpful to know this summer I spied a well run over frog on the sidewalk when we were out walking. My momma spied it too she said the words Leave it I knew I had better not touch it even though it smelled wonderful to me. I also had to learn the Drop it command for the same reason I like that one better because I usually get a yummy treat when I do that one. Those Momma's that teach us those two commands save us from allot of human heart failures the Momma's get all upset when we eat things that we think are good for some reason the Momma's do not like the dead frogs??? Forcing down a tablespoon or so of Hydrogen Peroxide saved Alex when he got into some De-Con in my dad's workshop.  He puked up everything.  Hope Porky is OK.

Other than having some major cotton-mouth, Porky hasn't had any ill effects from his deodorant eating yesterday.   He had trouble sleeping last night because his mouth keeps getting dry.  He would lay down in his bed and start smacking his lips and then give a little "harumpf" or grunt and go get a drink.   He had to get up for a drink at least 16 times in the night.   Poor little guy.

I asked the vet about the extra drinking and they said it was a normal thing after eating the deodorant and not to worry.  Porky doesn't seem to be quite as thristy tonight, just very sleepy from being up and down all night.   I was very concerned about him needing so much water, but am less worried now that he seems back to his normal self.  Usually I have to beg him to drink any water, and last night he just couldn't get enough.   The vet said the aluminum (yes...ALUMINUM!) in the deodorant probably dried out his tongue a little bit when he ate it and again when it got on his tongue after the peroxide puking.   I brushed his teeth and tried my best to brush his tongue to hopefully get off any residue that was left in his mouth.

I think I'm reading labels more carefully next time I go shopping for deodorant.  I had no idea they put toxic aluminum in it.  And we're putting it on our skin?!  Scary stuff.

All that water will flush his system out, so its a good thing.  When I had to give Alex the hydrogen peroxide treatment, it took about a week for his system to get back to normal.......meaning his poo finally firmed up.

believe it or not it is quite toxic for humans as it does not get excreted by the kidney, hence the swap to stainless steel cookware. Glad to here Jnr is on the mend, I think you should write a book about his antics......................Porky and ME

Thanks for the info Roberta!  I would love to write some books about Porky's adventures, but was thinking of doing a children's series.  I thought it would be fun to see illustrated pictures of some of his antics.   It would take some major work to put all the stories together and then find a publisher, but I might give it a shot.  I've been toying with the idea for quite a while now.

Kirby and I hope Porky is feeling much better!   :bandaid:   Bathroom stuff is not for doggies Porky!  But on the other hand I'm really glad to read all the suggestions.  I would not have known that about peroxide.  Very good to know.
