Long Hair grooming question.

Having never had a long haired dachshund before Im just guessing here...I'm thinking it's time for him to hit the groomers but...

should I trim the hair around his little manhood? looks like a great little pee catcher to me right now?

Two of my girls have long hair but Oscy is a short haired boy and doesn't have that.... problem!  I don't really take them to the groomer, although we do give Buelah a hair cut in the summer.  We live in Florida and it gets really hot.  Beatrice is only one and has not grown into her full coat yet.  We will most likely cut her for summers when she does.

OK, Like why would you want too? He got that hair hangin for a reason,, maybe its a feeler gauge for rough ground or something.. protection
I find Ceaser is very picky about keeping himself clean down there! Unless he is dripping all over the house or leaving pee trails around I would just see if he takes care of it.
If not some snipping may be in order,,, still....   :scratch:

I'm sorry but I really don't know. I've never had a longhair before.  I think it would be personal preference as to whether or not to cut it.  Like I said though, I really don't know.  I hope you find someone that can answer you.   Maybe the groomer knows??

I would say as long as the hair is not interfearing with function and pup keeps himself clean, then no trimming.  But it wouldn't be a bad idea during routine cuddle time to give it a peek and make sure all is well.  Also I think trimmed hair is more susceptible to becoming ingrown, and given the bacteria in the area, that would not be good.  You can always wipe it with a warm cloth or paper towel once or twice a week.

With my long hair Bouvier Males the only time the hair was cut there was by a professional groomer in the summer time when they got there haircuts Oklahoma is very hot in summer. I read some where Long Hair Dachshunds should not ever be cut it ruins their coat may grow back a different texture???I also have my first Long Hair Dachshund do know you have to brush them comb them out about once or twice a week. If you ever get mats get some Cowboy Magic you can find it in the horse section sometimes works wonders on mats found that out on my Bouvier's also works on Patches my Dachshund. It is best not to let any mats get started in the first place but once in awhile one will sneak up on you.Brush, brush,brush especially their teeth depending on the size of the dogs the little ones can have bad teeth quick. I shaved Cali's neck due to severe matting from her Invisible Fence collar...and, I trim out any other mats I find on her. I also make sure to keep the hair around her 'girlie parts & hinder' trimmed to avoid any snafus...LOL
Her hair is a PITA (Pain in the @ss)! It's more wiry in certain spots and her undercoat is dreadfully thick and her back hair is smooth & tangle free. As I wrote in her Bio-she's a walking MOP! Best of Luck!  :thumb: I'd rather shave where I need to rather than: Pulling the mats & hurting her, having her mat so bad her health is compromised, etc.

Jed, I have three longhairs and all three get the hair around their potty spots trimmed.  You can take him to the groomers if it makes you more comfortable, and just ask for a "sanitary cut". 

They'll know just what you need  :thumb:

Extra long hair "down there" can get wrapped around their equipment and cause major problems.  The link below shows an example. This particular one happened during mating, but we've all seen our neutered boys "lipstick" out, so it can happen anytime.  I'd rather keep them clean down there and not take the chance.

NO don't cut or trim it,  I've Oliver and he has no problems and angel Angus never had a problem the hair there does not grow long. Shorty looks like Oliver. If he has no mat behind ears etc just try and run the brush through him daily. Oliver loves getting brushed  and his coat is not the %$#@ type as Amy so Ido behind his ears and check for knots and tease them out gently if he has them, then roll him over and do the back of his front legs and his tummy and personal areas, and lastly brush his pantaloons as I call them. If I'm lucky I can get him to stand and brush his back, but he is a soooook and loves getting his tummy done. Shorty as I says reminds me of Oliver and if he is like Ollie his shaded areas get darker when his coat changes with the seasons. someonewill be very lucky to get him.

Doing someone like Amy and Brekke and Haillie is a diffrent story. Amy does NOT like being brushed, mind you I have rid her of her dead hair with the hack saw blade.
