A bit concerned

After reading the post on the raw foods I'm a bit concerned about what I have been giving Bailey these past few days.  She was fixed on Friday and also had her teeth cleaned and her gums fixed (the poor girl).  All in all she is doing very well.  Unfortunately she is on soft food (which leads to yucky poops) and can not have any bones or such for 10 days but on the up side she has started to sleep in the little "big" bed with my daughter - she was spoiled by my husband this weekend, because he felt sorry for her, and was able to lay in the big bed with us before bed and in the mornings.  Well that caused her to whine all night long and kept me up.  So, she played her dashie charm and wiggled her way to my daughters bed permanently .  Anyway, the reason for my concern is that she was given pain pills and an antibiotic to take at home.  The vet suggested that we hide them in liversaugsage.  Is that safe for her??   I've tried doing the cheese thing and she eats the cheese and spits out the pills...  If this is not good for her could anyone give me any other suggestions??

Thanks much!!!

I'm so glad to hear that she is doing well!  Poor little girl....all of that at one time!
I use peanut butter to hide the pills.  Not sure if it's the best thing in the world for them but it works. They are so busy licking the peanut butter off the roof of there mouth that they forget the pill is there and swallow it.

Is Daisy okay with Baily not feeling so well?

Hi Terri!!
Thanks for the suggestion.  I think I will try the peanut butter tonight (I actually have an all natural kind).  Daisy is doing okay with Bailey, Friday night when I brought Bailey home all Daisy did was this deep whining sound everytime she went in the bedroom Bailey was in.  Then on Saturday all she wanted to do was sniff Bailey's incesion (Bailey actually snapped at her).  But now they are both doing okay...
How is Toby???

I'm sure that this confused Daisy a bit.  Poor baby.  I remember when Oscy was neutered and Buelah did the same thing....the sniffing and whining and such.   Honestly, I think she and Daisy might be sisters!   :thinik:

LOL....I am a BAD mama!  I give mine Skippy Peanut Butter!  It does work though...that sausage stuff sounds pretty yucky to me!

Are her pills in tablet form?  If so, crush them up and mix into some cottage cheese.  It works!

I've always been able to give Cajsa pills in peanut butter.  I let her have a little bit so that she is licking then I give her the pill covered in PB then give her a chaser of plain PB so she licks her mouth enough to swallow it.
If I try to crush it and mix it in yogurt (a favorite treat) or anything else she won't eat it.  It's like it is poison or something and she won't touch it.

Liver sausage isn't raw. ;-) It should be just fine... most dogs love it, and gulp it down before they even taste it. LOL One approach you can try with pills is to use a "shotgun" approach... Have 4 or 5 small bits lined up...the 3rd or 4th contain the pill. Start handing them rapidly to the dog. They are so consumed with getting the treats that they don't notice what you've hidden in one of them.

Glad to hear she's doing infe...worming her way into the "Big Bed" is pretty typical :)

Peanut butter, cream cheese, etc...

A little dab on the end of the finger (or spoon if she's the type to take the whole finger) with the pill smooshed down inside...they never know it's there!

Beware of the liver sausage if it contains onions.  Onions are deadly to dogs.  I'd opt for the peanut butter as it has always worked for Clifford.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Thank you all for your advise.  I will stop the liversausage and try the peanut butter trick.

Poor Bailey. But at least that is all behind you guys now.  I vote for peanut butter too.  My friend with the ill golden said today that she has been using cheeze whiz for his pills and it works well too. I'll bet Bailey thinks this is all worth it to be sleeping in the big bed LOL! That's so sweet!!

I've been using peanut butter forever in giving Charlie his pills.  It works like a delicious charm in giving him prednisone now, but I've also used it in the past to give him his Interceptor Heartworm Preventive pills.   :headbang:

Well, last night when I got home I looked at the Liversausage and it does have 2% onion in it so we stopped that right away!!  I gave her some peanut butter with her pill and she took it right away....  The unfortunate thing is that about 2 hours later (while she was sleeping in my daughters bed) she threw up!!  I'm wondering if it was the peanut butter??

Ah yes, the joy of cleaning up doggy vomit and changing the sheets in the wee hours!  Poor little girl.  I doubt it was the peanut butter.  What with the anesthetic and the meds and the stress of everything I'm not surprised that her tummy was upset.  Has she vomited again?  If she vomits soon after taking the meds it might be a good idea to call the vet but if this is an isolated thing I probably wouldn't worry to much.

I will try the peanut butter again and see if she vomits again (then I will know).  This is actually the first time since she's been home that she has vomitted so that's why I linked it to the peanut butter (maybe it was too greasy or rich - I had to use Jiff since I was out of the natural kind).  I am now worried that Morgan won't want her sleeping in her bed anymore....  She was REALLY grossed out!!!

LOL...sorry to laugh, but poor Morgan!  I imagine she was pretty grossed out!  Hopefully a few vomitless nights and she will feel more comfortable sharing her bed!
Let me know how Miss Baily does with the Peanut Butter tonight.  I give mine whatever I happen to have in the cupboard at the time but who knows....  her belly clearly didn't like it to much!  :(  Poor little girl!  Did you have to give Daisy some peanut butter?  When I give one of mine a pill in the PB, the others give me "the face"....I end up giving it to all three.

OK, I posted something on this yesterday, but it seems to have gone to the ozone, so I'll try to recreate what I sent.

First, I would NOT worry about the minute amount of onion that is in the sausage. Yes, it's true that onion (and to some smaller extent garlic) can cause Heinz Body Anemia in dogs. That said, it must be a particularly sensitive individual to have immediate problems--which would be recognizable, and the treat could be stopped! Most dogs would literally have to get into a bag of onions and munch away to be able to eat the volume of onion required to have a problem. Here is a link to a document that talks about this:
http://www.nssvet.org/student/references/simmonsvettech_424.pdf

Also, I have a friend who was involved with the Volhards when they developed their natural diet years ago. At that time it included onion. Her dogs were tested and vet checked continually (blood test etc.) throughout the process and *none* of them ever had a problem with onions (her entire kennel, quite a number of dogs). I can dig up a post she sent me on that, if you'd like.

You'd be giving such tiny amounts of sausage that it would definitely not be a problem. By the way, I had a sheltie that I took to 4 obedience titles using liverwurst--so I've got personal experience with this.  Anyway, dogs do not just "drop over dead" because they've eaten some onion.

As for the peanut butter... some dogs are sensitive to peanuts (I've got one with a peanut allergy) so it could be that. More likely it was an upset caused by the drug. I don't recall what you said it was... have you looked it up to see if vomiting is a known side effect?
