Mel called me Friday night and was very worried about Mimi.  She had not been feeling herself lately and on Friday she had some type of a seizure.  I tried to contact Mel this week-end but did not hear back from her until this morning.  This week-end Mimi was holding her own and Mel would check on her every hour around the clock.  She is taking medication (not sure what).  The wierd thing is that Mel stated when the seizure occurred, Mimi's neck swelled up right before their very eyes.  So far no more seizures the past two days.  Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?  Mel may be on later today.....I know she would appreciate all the prayers and well wishes you can muster up and she can fill you in on the details.    Cheryl

Oh No!!!  I really hope Mimi will be okay and not have any more seizures.     Could it be an allergy issue??    :dontknow:  I know that when there is a blockage of oxygen it can cause seizures (at least in humans) so maybe she had an allergic reaction to something and her neck swelled and that was the cause.  I really don't know what could have caused that, I'm just taking a guess.   We will be praying for Mel and Mimi!  :comfort:   Please keep us posted on how they are doing.   That's very scary.

Hi everyone!! Thanks for posting Cheryl. I have been running ragged with work and Mimi, didn't have time to post. I have had to give Mimi the sedation before when her neck acts up. The vet thinks it is either a pinched nerve or a swollen disc. She has had this problem since I got her in 2001. Usually she freezes up for a few seconds and whines and then it is done. I give her baby aspirin when that happens to help. This time was different. When I was at the vets on Wednesday of last week for my other two I told the vet how she was acting. Really not herself and helping when the other two got too close. She was walking and moving fine so I knew it wasn't her back plus I did all the normal tests. I thought she may have bruised her side. So the vet told me to keep her sedated for a few days and see how she does. Well come Friday night she was having a problem breathing. I called the tech that I am friends with from the vet's office. She lives close by and came over. I didn't know if she had developed a reaction to the meds or not. While the tech was there Mimi had what she though was a seizure and her neck swelled up. We were able to get her collar off but with lots of screaming from Mimi. The tech called the vet and talked to him. He remembers Mimi really well. Told me to keep her on the meds (which is acepromazine) and also gave me a anti inflammatory med (can't remember the name) that I give her as well. They can be given together with no problems. He says that as she gets older it will get worse. There isn't much that can be done for it either. But he didn't seem to think it was an actual seizure. Just a more severe reaction to the pain. So I no longer have a regular collar on her, I put on a harness. She hates it but will have to live with it. I check on her every hour through the night and during the day she is confined to a small area where there is nothing to jump on, so all she can do is snuggle in her blankets. Also I am keeping the boys away from her. I am pretty worn out since Friday. It doesn't help I have one heck of a nasty cold. So please keep sending rays and prayers. The vet did tell me that I need to be prepared to let her go if it gets worse. I really hope it doesn't come to that. I have been checking in with him everyday. If he has the time today he said I can bring her by so he can see her. Won't charge me for the visit either. Which really helps me out right now! I will keep you posted on her condition. Also look for Mimi tomorrow in Star of the Day!! I may post that tonight because I won't have time to do that in the morning.

Thanks again

Oh Mel, I am so sorry to hear this.  :comfort: That's heartbreaking!   Poor Mimi!    Mimi needs you to take care of yourself too as much as possible.  Try and get enough sleep to fight off your cold.  Its not very encouraging to hear from your vet that her problems will only get worse.   I would be a wreck if they ever told me that about Porky!   If you need anything let me know.    I'm here to talk if you need to.    Justin and I will be praying for you and your family.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the rays and prayers and I am sure Mimi does as well. When I got home she was not doing so well. I gave her the sedation and the anti inflamitory. She is resting now but doesn't want to lift her head much at all. I will try to get to her star of the day tonight if I can. I am not staying on the computer long because she really wants me settled beside her. Right now she whining because I am not touching her. So if I don't post the star of the day tonight I will tomorrow, might be after work though.

I know that if I can keep her quiet and settled she does well. But can I really keep her sedated forever? I am only supposed to do this for 8 to 10 days. Then watch her. The vet thinks that will be enough time to get her muscles back to good condition. He thinks if she is still having problems after that then it probably won't get better. My mother thinks I can just keep her sedated. She seems to be fine when she is. I just wonder about keeping her that way all the time. She will develope a resistance from it so it won't help her for much longer I wouldn't think. All I can do now is just keep her happy and pain free. Will keep everyone posted. I better get back to her now.

Thanks again,

Mel
