Loki update

Wonder Weienr is doing really well.  She got her feet under her by Sunday night and then wanted to RUN!  It does not help that the yard is full of Mulberries and 4--er, now 3 groundhogs. 

The ER vet called for a follow up and reported that on Saturday morning meeting Loki sat on her lap for an hour, wagging her tail.  YIKEs.

We set up the X-pen so she has a little front porch on her crate.  This morning I let her wander around in the kitchen while I got ready for work.  We are still not letting her out of the crate during the day, and she goes to bed early each night.  I reckon out of 24 hours in a day she is on her butt in the crate for 20 hours. She gets about an hour in the morning to visit and pee a few hours to take care of business and visit in her porch in the evening.  She really really wants a rawhide chewy, but ain't no way she's gettin THAT!

Oh, and I added her info to Dodger's List.  And the total bill??  Ready? $4K. (As it turns out, almost the exact amount DH got for his car that was totalled ten days before--so there ya have it, God gave me what I needed, when I needed it.)  It coulda been worse as they were able to see what they wanted to see on the first diagnostic test and they discharged her in less than 24 hours.  They sure did fill her fulla drugs, too.  A Fentanal patch, two codeine  shots, Metacam and lotsa antibiotics.  My mom and co-workers have been asking about the cost, butcha know, they really don't have the same perspective as we do here on the board.  I figger if you can do it and pay for it, and the doggie is not even middle aged, then morally you HAVE to do it, no questions.

That is great news! I'm so glad she is doing so well! I totally can relate to family and friends not understanding the lengths we will go to to care for our furkids. When Penny had her back surgery she was only 4 years old and the picture of health in all other ways. There was NO question in our mind what we would do for her. I think our total bill for everything came out to around 6k (it was a holiday weekend...New Years Eve/Day... to boot so that added to the cost). Other than my parents (because they totally understand) we really didn't tell anyone about the cost b/c we know the crazy responses we would get. Some family members (without knowing the cost) wanted to know why go through the trouble of it all...just put her to sleep!

Leslie...fantastic news that Loki is doing so well  :apls: :apls:  Yeah...I am another one who can relate to people thinking I was crazy for paying $2,600 when Zoe had her back surgery in Aug. 06.  But like you guys said...she was only 3 1/2 and totally healthy in all other respects so there was never a doubt in our minds that we wouldn't give her the surgery she needed.  And, if she needed it today at age 5 1/2, we would certainly do the same.  If you need any moral support to help you get through the next few crate-rest weeks, just PM me and I will give you my phone number so we can talk :thumb:

Glad to hear that Loki is doing so well.  I agree, there is no price you can place on the love you get from our furbabies and the love we have for them.  That is priceless.  Keeping healing rays coming your way.

What if your dog is 11?  That's middle-aged, right?  I figure she will (she must) live to be at least 16, so that's a mere $1000/year if you average it out.  A bargain!  Who's with me?

That is one of my pet peeves when your dog is sick and the vets people are standing there telling you how much things will cost..who cares, it's not even a thought, I have things I can sell (like a kidney) just fix my dog.

Just popping in - one of the rare instances I have a "to myself Sunday".
My 2 cents on vet bills -
People DON'T understand unless they have pets.  To date, King Sol is almost 11 yrs old and I would estimate we've spent over $6k on him.  Back surgery itself was $4k.  Worth every penny.  Its been 6 years - going on 7 since he had that surgery and I wouldn't be able to put a price on those years.
I will say though, we got VPI Pet Insurance for both dogs when we got Kirby (of course Sol's has some riders about pre-existing conditions) and that too, is worth every penny.  Recently I had Sol's teeth cleaned, and then we went through that whole scare with the mass on his tongue.  I paid about $720, and the insurance reimbursed me around $360.  Nice relief when you aren't expeting those bills!
