Roscoe passed away peacefully this afternoon.  He started acting lethargic last night and this morning, his vet examined him and sent him to the E.R., where he struggled until it was time to let him go.

He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him and all who loved reading his "posts" here on Wiener Writings.

As the Tin Woodman said, Now I know I have a heart, because it's breaking."

I'm doing much better with dachshunds and rabbits."

I am so sorry Karen. I can't imagine the pain and hurt you are feeling right now! We are thinking of you and sending you hugs and support. Do they know what  caused him to be sick?

Karen, I am so sorry to hear about Roscoe.    for you and your family at this time.  Know that my hearts breaks for you at having to say farewell to such a loving friend.  I'll tell my Heidi Ho to go and say hi to him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and the rest of the herd.

Like I had told you on the phone, when we lost Rusty almost 7 years ago, the symptoms were virtually identical.   When you lose a pupper it is too easy to fixate on the loss rather than the years of happiness they brought you.   Like the conclusion we came to with Rusty, it was simply Roscoe's time, and there is nothing anyone could have done differently to change that outcome.

This board is the best place to be when it's our puppers time.   Having been through the loss of three puppers in a period of less than five years (Rusty 12/01, Rudy 6/05 and Max 10/06), the people here are the most supportive people you can find.  Please feel free to post your thoughts and your feelings.  We all really do understand

When I spoke to Karen, they thought it was one of two possibilities.  Either that he had a mass of some sort internally that began to bleed out (such as blood clot or an embolism), or that he had ingested rat poisioning.   I certainly hope that it was the former and not the latter.   The symptoms sounded completely identical to when we lost Rusty, and the time frame was very similar.  I'm inclined to believe that it was something internal.

Oh, Karen, I am so sorry. All losses are hard, but the sudden ones seem to be the hardest. There is just no time to prepare. I was just laughing earlier when I read one of his posts. I wish you all the comfort you can find from the rest of the herd. The board will always be here for you. Most of us have lost one of our own. When packing up the final things on Sunday, I realized that I was leaving the place that held so many memories of Kendall-angel. But, I remembered I will always have those memories, no matter where I live. Hugs to you and belly rubs to the others who are missing their buddy.

I am so sorry!  I know only too well how sad it is to lose a furbaby.  Even knowing your friendship will last throughout eternity, it's the trying not to trip over the lively lovely little body that hurts the most. You have my heart felt sympathy (and empathy), and my hugs and prayers.

Mike

We all share your sorrow with Roscoe's passing.  May the time of grief pass quickly and the time of joyful remembrance ease the pain.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Karen, there are no words to describe how sad I am to hear this! You did the most loving thing for him. He is no longer suffering, but running like a puppy with everyone else that has gone before him. I'm sure if he could, he would thank you for the life you gave him on this earth and for helping him cross the bridge when he couldn't stay here anymore. Godspeed, little guy.

AAAAAAaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwww.  That is so sad. I am so sad to hear this. Poor Roscoe.  But man, did he have it made.  Take comfort in the fact that you provided a loving, healthy home for this little dude.  Rest in Peace, Roscoe.

God promised at the birth of time,
A special friend to give,
His time of earth is short, he said,
So love him while he lives

It may be six or seven years
Or twelve or then sixteen.
But will you, till I call him back,
Take care of him for me?

A wagging tail and cold wet nose
And silken velvet ears,
A heart as big as all outdoors,
To love you through the years.

His puppy ways will gladden you
and antics bring a smile,
as guardian or friend he will,
be loyal all the while.

He'll bring his charms to grace your life
And though his stay be brief,
When he's gone the memories
Are solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay
Since all from earth return,
But lessons only a dog can teach
I want you each to learn.

Whatever love you give to him,
Returns in triple measure,
Follow his lead and gain a life
Brim full of simple pleasure.

Enjoy each day as it comes,
Allow your heart to guide,
Be loyal and steadfast in love
As the dog there by your side.

Now will you give him all your love
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call
To take him back again.

I fancy each of us would say,
"Dear Lord, thy will be done,
For all the joy this dog shall bring,
The risk of grief we'll run.

We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known,
Forever grateful stay.

But shall the angels call for him
Much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
And try to understand.

I am so sorry that this post is late.  I've been out of town and just saw it this morning.  I echo what everyone else here on the board is feeling.  My heart goes out to you and the rest of the herd.  Roscoe, The Handsome One will be missed by all of us.

I'm so, so sorry about Roscoe. Remember the good times, the fun times, and the times he was a little naughty. The sadness never passes, but it gets softer as time goes by.
