Hostels

I have question have any of you ever stayed at a hostel while on vacation?  Since I did not do anything special for my 50th birthday I decided that this year, since my birthday falls on election day(strange huh) I am taking myself on a small trip to NYC and am contemplating staying at a hostel.  Last time I was in NYC, due to circumstances beyond my control, I only got to see Ground Zero and Central Park, so this time I want to see more thus the hostel.  I figure if I can get a great price I can stay longer and really be a tourist.
So if any fellow dachie lovers haver ever stayed at a hostel of any kind please let me know what you thought.

There was just an article in Outside magazine about a hostel in Manhatten, in the last two months.  I'll see if I can find it.
