My Mom told me yesterday that my Uncle Rod was diagnosed with cancer.  He has a spot on one lung and a spot on his liver.  He had his first chemo treatment yesterday, and I'm waiting to hear how that went. Rod was a long time smoker, but quit in the 80s.

A few years back my Uncle Lee was diagnosed with lung cancer.  He was scheduled for chemo but died two weeks after they found the cancer and didn't even get a chance to have any treatment.  Lee smoked for about tenyears, but quit about 30 years before he died.  His insurance office was next to a doctor's office, and Lee's desk was on the opposite side of the wall from the doctor's x-ray machine.  I always wondered if that was a factor.  Can x-rays go through drywall?

Given the family history, I am very scared for my uncle.  I'm also a little bit scared for my dad now that both of his brothers have had this terrible disease.  At least Dad never really smoked.  He tried to take it up when I was little, but Mom wouldn't let him smoke in the house, and they worked together and she wouldn't let him smoke there either.  He got tired of her badgering him and just gave up on ever taking up smoking.  Maybe she saved his life!  I hope so!

Please pray for my Uncle Rod.  He has always been such a kind and loving uncle to me, and I am not ready to let go.

Prayers will be going up from S.C.
Has he ever had the radon levels checked in his house? I don't know what they are like where he lives, but in S.C. we have areas that are high, especially in our area. I know of two people that have gotten lung cancer who are nonsmokers. Both homes had very high radon levels. In one of the cases, the person had his exercise room in the basement, which naturally was where the level was the highest. It was also where he would be breathing in the most of the radon gas. He died about 5 years ago. The other person is only in her late 30's or early 40's with 3 children ages 8, 5, and 1. Her prognosis is very poor. It seems that lung cancer for radon is often a rare type and harder to treat.
As for xrays passing through drywall, I'm not completely sure, but I do know that we used to have to have walls that were lead lined in dental offices in the rooms where the xray machines were. When our last office was built, I think that wasn't required, but only because the radiation levels we use are so low. I would feel quite certain that medical offices would be required to have lead lining in their walls if xray machines are in the room since their levels are much higher than ours are. DHEC has always been picky about radiation safety.
