Just asking ahead....  I will be having surgery next Wednesday - a hysterectomy.  For someone who has never been in the hospital with anything - it is pretty scary for me !!!!  Just asking for some good thoughts that day !!!   The plan is to be in the hospital a couple days then recoup for 2 weeks and then hopefully be able to go back to work partial days.  After the hospital stay and a day or 2 at home - I should be able to do some work from home via laptop.  I hope, I hope !!!!

I know Rudy and Brandy will like mom to be home and I will snuggle with them all the time !!!

Thanks everyone !!!

(would appreciate any one else's experiences with this type surgery !!!)

Rays will be coming your way, Barb!  I went down that path in 1990 because of cancer.  I was off work for six weeks -- it was a 3 day stay for me in the hospital and then home for the remaining six weeks.  Length of time may be different now as technology has come so far!  No lifting, watch the stairs, take it easy and ENJOY Brandy and Rudy, who will be wonderful nurses to you!  Dee

I was in the hospital 3 days and 2 nights, and 6 weeks off work recovering at home.  You will be just fine, Barb.  Don't get frustrated if you have no energy whatsoever.  I didn't get back to 100% energy-wise for about 3 months.  But this operation is one of the best operations I ever had, and I hope you think so too.  Just take it easy.  I hope your guy is the type to cater to you.  Dan was great at getting me whatever I wanted to eat, etc........only trouble was that I had no appetite, nothing sounded good.  I kept a lot of fruit on hand and it tasted good.  I kinda enjoyed sitting around and doing nothing for 6 weeks, I watched a LOT of movies!

We'll be sending good thoughts in your direction, Barb.

My mom had one about 3 years and 3 months ago.  What I remember is that she could not lift anything more than 5 pounds, so she had to get milk in half gallons.  She was up and around pretty fast, but moving slowly, and since she was retired, she didn't have to worry about going back to work.  Whomping up some big rays for your surgery... :bandaid:

I'm sorry you have to go through this Barb! But in addition to the experiences here, everyone I know whos had this surgery also said it was the best thing in the end. I'm sure you will be fine, you will have good nurses and hopefully a little bell to ring for Jimmy to bring you stuff! LOL!

One of my friends had this surgery about 3 years ago. She got her "monthly visitor" the morning of her surgery and said "oh YEAH??? Well you have a big surprise coming today, little missy!"   Revenge is sweet!!

Kids don't jump on Mommy's tummy for a few weeks...just gentle snuggles.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww,   :bandaid:  So sorry you have to go through this.

You'll feel crappy for a week and then tired for a month, then bored, then antsy and frustrated, then you'll get better.

Just a couple of ideas if you have not had any experience with being bed-ridden and/or shouldn't lift...

They sell a product that's like Ensure, it's called Boost.  I drink it when my blood sugar drops and it's really handy to have around when you are sick and don't want to eat.

Get yerself a big pillow and a laptop so ya don't have to sit at yer desk.

My g-friend went out and bought a $15.00 used wheelchair and she used it to carry stuff around the house.  Like you want to take a bookbag, a can of pop and 97 pillows out to the sofa, load up the chair and push it to the living room.  (After she was feeling better and didn't need it, she put it in the basement to truck the laundry back and forth [some idjit put the dryer hook up about a 1/4 mile from the washer.] But I digress...)

Get yerself a bunch of those wee little bottled waters--the 6 oz size.  Pop a bunch in the freezer and get Jimmy to put 4 or 5 in a bowl or bucket near the bed.  They stay real cold all day.

Anyhoo, please be sure to tell your hubby and visitors that they gotta wash their hands and stay the heck away from ya if they are sick so you don't catch a cough--which my mom (a nurse) sez is about the worst thing that can happen when you recovering from any abdominal surgery.  Get a flu shot?

"Jimmy, bring that bowl of chocolate covered Vicoden, Pa-leeze."

Does Krispey Kreme deliver?  'cause then you'll be totally covered.

You'll be fine, it's important for your health to go thru this step and in six months you'll wonder what the worry was.  Love you and good luck!

But the vicoden DOES help.

Rays from Oklahoma patches & Buddy too,As a 100 yr old nurses aide and had a partial hyst years ago depends if you are having the band-aide type surgery that is popular now days or having the old time surgery.Any surgery if you place a pillow over the surgical site not unless it is a vaginal surgery any time you cough give the pillow a hug really helps.Bed rest is a big no no nowdays can cause blood clots so do not be surprised if they have you up the evening of your surgery going to the bathroom at the hospital. Of course you will need to follow your doctors orders. Most of the time you are suppose to turn ,cough & deep breathe when you wake up from the surgery about every 2 hours or so use the pillow to hug then too less pain that way. Also if you roll over onto your side & push up with your elbow as you swing your legs out of bed hugging the pillow helps.
If they want you to take estrogen and it is Premrin may not have spelled it right that drug needs to be removed from the market because they are cruel to horses when they make it. They take pregnant mares Usually the Belgin & Percheon type big horses they are pregnant they give they very little water so their urine is concentrated and that is what they make the drug from.Of course it is up to you and your doctor but I do not think doctors know how it is made. One of my doctors tried to put me on it I told him no because it was cruel to horses he looked at me like I had two heads. When I had my hyst they left my ovaries but now at 57 yrs old I still have never taken any drugs for menopause.Just wanted you to be aware of it of course you can do as you wish.
Good Luck with your surgery I'm sure you will breeze though it with no problems just do not use a heating pad on your incision my sister did & got an infection but she asked for one and some dumb doctor ok'ed it a weekend doctor not her doctor.
Hope I have enlightened you and hope I have not scared you.

Brandy and Rudy, you're gonna have a BIG job to do.  Fluff pillows, fluff blankies, warm feet and lap, serious snuggle duties and all around protect and nurse Mom.  Are ya up to the task?  SURE YA ARE!  Loads of rays coming your way, Barb.  It doesn't sound like fun but this may be a super opportunity to catch up on all the naps you've missed for the year and a supreme chance to catch up on snuggle time with the puppers.  Best wishes and praying that everything comes out okay.
