Okay. here's the deal. Went downstairs to o some laundry. Porky got into the cupboard in the bathroom and ate half a HALLs cough drop the ice blue pepermint kind.  Called the vet no answer.  Other vet says he should be fine but I'm still worried.  Watching him VERY closely.  Any ideas about whether or not this could harm him?     Since this is per cough frop amounts, I'm thinking he got at least 4 mg of the Menthol.  That's the one I'm most concerned about.  The animal poison control wants to charge me a bundle just to tell me.  So..if any of you know and can make a quick response please do.  I made Porky vomit by administering peroxide just in case.  This was done immediately after I took it our of his mouth.  I'm not sure how much he swallowed.   Anywhere from 1-5 mg is possible.  Please help if you have any ideas.  He seems okay.  I hope i'm just being paranoid!

Heres a list of the ingredients.  I'm doing a frantic search on the internet trying to find anything.  So...far nothing. :xfinger:

Active Ingredient: Menthol 11.2 mg Inactive Ingredients: Blue 1 Flavors, Glucose Syrup, Sucrose

Mentho-Lyptus®:

I'm not a vet, but if you made him vomit it up I'm sure that there shouldn't be a problem...  :dontknow:

Actually, he's going to be fine. He just vomitted up the entire part of the cough drop that he ate. I called the vet and they said that is great news, but it wouldn't have harmed him if he'd gotten any. The worst it will do is 1 make him sleepy, 2. give him the shakes a little. They say they doubt his body absorbed any of the menthol in the cough drops. So...we should be just fine. Thank God!!!

Thank you so much for trying to help.  I'm just glad he'll be okay.  What a naughty little boy.  Guess he's back to being in thecrate while i'm busy working in the house.   :doah:  Plus those child safety locks are getting replaced as we speak.

I think Porky will be fine.  I few minutes with Google, and I learned that meds with menthol is sometimes used for relief from kennel cough.  Since it's only one cough drop, I doubt he had too much menthol.

Thanks Jeri!   :thumb:  That's what I read too.   But, being paranoid about it and triple checking with different vets can never hurt. Although i do feel kinda stupid about it.  It was just scary to find him lying there chomping on the stupid cough drop.      If we had drawers in the bathroom they wouldn't have to be sotred at doxie level!!   :BangHead:  If anything confirms our need to move outta here this incident does.  None of the cupboards here have latches.  So..you have to install child safety locks, which Porky can fit his nose in and chew them apart.   :doah:  So...they don't do much good.

Always best to be safe and find out what you can.  I figured if he threw it up, then he should be ok.  PORKY - stay out of stuff !!!!

Wow, got to this post late. I talked to a friend who is a vet tech and she just laughed and asked how Tuttle was doing!! Yep sure sounds like something he would do. But she said that there is no harm and gave the same answer all of you found, given for Kennel cough. SOOO... Porkey be a good boy and not try to give your momma a heart attack!!!

I am a better person because I have my Mimi and Tuttle and now Carson!!!

Yeah..the funniest part was whe the vet said to me, "Its really strange that he didn't try and spit it out.  What breed is he?"   When I told him Porky is a dachshund, he roared with laughter and said, "Oh! that explains alot!  This isn't the first time he's eaten things he shouldn't either, is it?"  Wow, he hasn't even met Porky and he's already got him figured out.   :2funny:

You might want to keep some of those methol drops handy in case he takes a liking to kitty or skwirl droppings in the yard.  Talk about bad breath!!!!
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.
