Just got off the telephone with the vet.   The test results revealed that Porky does in fact have canine influenza (a cold).    He seems to be feeling a lot better today and is almost back to his energetic mischevious self again.   The vet instructed me to keep him on my lap or in his crate for the rest of today and then tomorrow for 8 hours.  Basically his crate/lap time goes down a little more each day.   Porky is pretty weak and tired from having diarrhea since Saturday. So we want to be sure he gets lots of rest.  Whether he thinks he needs it or not.

The symptoms of his cold could last a few weeks or even one more day.  The vet was pretty sure Porky will be over it by tomorrow but was concerned that Porky was so tired and weak.  Hence the mandatory crate rest.  Porky is still sneezing and seems to have a stuffy nose now but he is slowly getting better.  He is to the point now where I feel comfortable leaving him to take a shower ect....yesterday I was terrified to leave him because he was doing so badly.   The vet assured me that Porky will be "just fine" while i am at work this afternoon.  Hopefully we won't have to go back to the vet, but we have an appointment for Friday morning just in case Porky is still feeling icky then.

I forgot to tell you all that the vet found out that the diarrhea was caused by Porky's water dish or our tap water.  Porky caught some kind of parasite either because of bad tap water or a dirty water dish.   I'm guessing its from the tap water sinceI wash his dishes in the dishwasher on high heat twice a week.   My husband and I have not been sick from the water because we rarely use the tap water.  When we do it is for cooking and it gets boiled first.   I found out a few of our neighbor dogs have had diarrhea as well so i'm pretty confident its the water.

The vet did say that the flu could be making his upset tummy worse although he doesn't know that diarrhea is one of the symptoms for sure since the flu is primarily a respiratory thing.  Porky is on a rice only diet until it clears up completely.  Then he can have rice mixed with a few peices of salmon.  Once he can tolerate that we will gradually add kibble till he's back on that fully.

From now on, Porky is getting the same water we get.   Or i will boil his water before giving it to him to drink.   I have contacted the city about it and they said they are checking on it since they have had "numerous complaints."
