Tricky work question

Here are the brief details.  Administrative Assistant "Susie" to CEO was fired.  (the details don't really matter here)  Subordinate "Kate" steps up to the plate and fulfills some of the duties, but the learning curve is high and doesn't learn it all before she becomes ill.  "Kate" returns to work for a brief period and I come on board.  Kate trains me for 8 weeks when it becomes apparent that she is not well enough to continue working.  Kate goes out on disability.

Now it doesn't look good for her, and indeed, she is probably terminal.

Soooo, I have been learning on the job.  My question.  I think I am ready to take "Susie's" original position but don't want to appear insensitive to Kate's situation.  How do I approach the CEO?

Your input, please!

Leslie, I assume the position is kind of left unfilled at this time, out there in the twilight zone, correct?  And you are working the position every day and fulfilling the job duties without having the official title.  If there is no possibility that Kate will ever return to work, I really don't believe that you would be stepping on anyone's toes or coming across as insensitive.  I would just sit down and talk to the CEO and tell him exactly that....you don't want to appear insensitive to Kate....but the job is unfilled and you see the need and would like to assume the responsibilities.  I think it would be okay.  I understand that you may be feeling uncomfortable with how others at work may view your intentions.  To me it sounds like your heart is in the right place....and I do feel that others at work will understand and if they don't....well...you know that you have good intentions and the bottom line is that the position still needs to be handled.....Good luck!   :xfinger:Cheryl

Thanks Cheryl.  Looks like Kate may only have a few weeks left. I really really like her, too, she is so smart and funny and upbeat--interaction with her really was the highlight of my day in the office.  I can NEVER fill her shoes. Will wait until the dust settles and will approach boss just as you said.  Perfect!  Thanks for your input!
