Well, 9 days after her back surgery (last Wed), Cookie reached 2 new milestones last night:

1.   She played with her favorite squeaky toy “monster” yesterday.  It’s the first time she showed interest in her toys since she started being in pain (last Monday 1/1/07)
2.   She stood up and tried to take 2 steps before falling again.   :hello2: She hasn’t tried again, but we were so happy to see her get up and try to take steps again.  It gives me hope that she will walk again.

We have noticed her right leg is much stonger than her left.  The left leg was the one to go first when she started having the back problems, so I wonder if it will take longer to come back.   :thinik:  She is now trying to get up on her right leg and drag her left one.

That is great!  Cajsa's left side is weaker than her right as well.  It's really only noticable when she's tired or has been stationary for a while (as in napping in a lap!).  She does occasionally race through the house faster than she should and will sit down in the middle of a turn before continuing on her way.

Did the vet give you any exercises to strenghten the left leg maybe down the road swimming would be a good exercise for her???

That is excellent news !!!!  Do you sling walk her periodically through the day?  And did the vet give you excercises to help strengthen her legs?   Thats a great sign that she is interested in playing !!!

Thank you all!

We are so excited!  Tonight she started trying to walk on BOTH legs!  SHe can go a few step before falling down.  It is getting so hard to keep her still and contained.  Before she would sit still whereever we are, but now she keeps trying to get up move.  Back to the playpen for her!

We have noticed these milestones seem to occur when there is food involved and she wants to get to the kitchen.   She loves food, and will do whatever it takes to try and get to the kitchen.    :2funny:

And as far as exercises, we were not given any.  We have a follow up appointment next week and I will ask.  For now we are just trying to keep her confined and not moving too much.

Here is a picture of her sitting on the patio with my DH- she needs her daily dose of sunshine. :)

Got to love the San Diego sun! I think that Penny misses her sun bathing. I'm glad to hear that she is improving. I have it on my list to ask about the therapy as well. Since we were back in the hospital on Monday our follow-up isn't for a couple more weeks so let me know what they say on therapy for Cookie.

I will ask about supplements and exercises.  This board has been so wonderful- i would not think to ask about these things!

Cookie's walking has improved quite a bit today.  In fact tonight she has decided to skip walking and move onto running.   Keeping her still keeps getting harder and harder.  :verdict:

Be careful with the running.  Most Vet's recommend crate rest after surgery for 6 to 8 weeks....I know it is getting hard to keep her occupied.  Kongs with peanut butter work wonders or chew bones.  It is wonderful news that she feels so good...just remember, take it slow and easy   :thumb: :hello2:
