I just returned from a special staff tour of Smithsonian's exhibit, "The Bible Before 1000."  I saw the most marvelous things.  The highlight of my tour was the Isaiah scroll from the Dead Sea Scrolls.  I never in my life expected to see one of the Dead Sea Scrolls!  There were two early examples of Saint Jerome's Vulgate, and some beautiful codexs from Lindisfarne.  There was a pure gold Byzantine codex cover from the 5th century, and 5-7th century Coptic book stand.  In all there are 74 objects in the exhibit.

This exhibit is in the Sackler part of the Freer Sackler Gallery, which is the white marble building to the west of Smithsonian Castle, on the mall.  It closes very soon, at 5:30 pm Sunday, January 7.  Even though this is late notice, I hope that if you are in the Washington, DC area and if you areinterested that you can find the time to go.
