I have a queston.  Does anyone else have a dachshund that gets sick when they eat any milk products. My Porky gets sick all the time when I feed him anything with milk in it.  Could it be an allergy?  If you have any ideas why this may be happening please let me know.

Rich

Could be an allergy, could be lactose intolerance just like in humans.  If he's eating everything else well I wouldn't be too worried, but a phone call to the vet can give you peace of mind.

It is possible to have a sensitivity to milk, if that was the only food that caused the trouble I'd just avoid giving him any.  We can't let Cajsa have tomatoes or she will have bloody poops.  (Thing is she LOVES tomatoes, so it's difficult to do!)  I'd just watch and see if that was the only type of food that caused problems.  IF so, then just avoid it like you would for an allergy.

This warning shows up on most internet serches for "foods dangerous to dogs "

"D A I R Y   P R O D U C T S
Dairy products are not generally dangerous, unless they contain a lot of fat , but they are usually digested poorly by both dogs and cats, who have little or none of the enzyme required to digest the lactose in milk. Just like lactose-intolerant people, lactose-intolerant dogs can develop excessive intestinal gas (flatulence) and may have foul-smelling diarrhea. It is best to avoid most dairy products altogether, although small amounts of cheese or plain yogurt are tolerated by most dogs, since these products have less lactose than most."
