Eileen

Greetings from a cold Colorado today....8 degrees!  For those of you who know me and mine, I am walking with a limpy walk now (kind of ditched the cane) and my broken ankle is still swollen, but I'm doing much better.  Kleine is also doing better, miracle of miracles.  I'm afraid to even say anything, but she seems to be standing longer and walking somewhat better.  When she is out in the snow, I kind of hold her tail up and she takes off!!!  I went for a third opinion on Kleine from the wonderful vet who did Schnitzel's surgery (whom I finally found) and he believes that she does have something going on at the site of her original surgery and does not have myelitis (an inflammation of her whole spinal cord, which can be fatal) which is what those crazy vets at CSU told me she has.  She does, however, now have the problems with her right side associated with the spinal tap they did (which may or may not resolve itself in time).  Believe me, I have written a letter to the Director of CSU about the whole mess.  Anyway, I was just wondering if any of your Doxies howl....I mean, really HOWL.  From the time we adopted Luther, we notice that at times when the girls are barking, he will start howling and this morning he went into a rather advanced version of this.  I thought I had a wolf in my living room!!!  Then when the girls heard this, they started barking, yipping and yapping.  So I had a whole orchestra of dog sounds going on.  Is this just a boy-Doxie thing??

First of, I am glad to hear the Kleine and you are doing better.

Lily is the most vocal of my four.  She will howl like a banshee some times.  Usually she does it when I leave for work or am coming home and don't get into the house fast enought to suit her.  She also does what I call yodeling.   It is different from her howling.  I can get her to do it on command.  She and my dad yodel at each other every time he comes to visit.  They have been doing this since she was just a pup.  I haven't heard any of the others howl, including my male, Max.

One of the dogs I used to have would howl! I can't exactly remember which one it was,but it was funny to hear it! :thumb:

Roberta

In a word, yes Oliver does it when he gets real real excited, a real ridgy dige hound howl.

Glad to hear that you both are on the mend, I to would be giving that vet a sharp letter.

It's so good to hear that your on the mend Eileen!  It's been a long haul for both you and Kleine!
My Toby can really howl!  He doesn't do it often but if he is upset or stressed (such as the first trip to the groomers) he howls up a storm!  Oscy has this sort of talk-cry-howl thing that he does when he wants attention.  There is really no good way to describe it.  Buelah is my quiet girl.  She can just knock me over with a look.
I was playing with Toby a few days ago and got him going into the howl thing but it really sounded more like singing!  Jingle Bells perhaps?  :)

Good to hear that both you and Kleine are doing better.

Ozzy does not howl, but he will make a sound that is a mixture of a bark and a growl, when he is happy.

Hi Eileen, I am glad to hear that you and Kleine are feeling a little better, and I wish you both a much speedier recovery.
Alex is my howler.  If he gets left at home, like if I have to take Willy and Misty someplace, he will howl.  Even if Dan is there with him and he has a good treat to distract him.  I don't ever leave just one dog home alone anymore.

Barb

So glad you two girls are on the mend !!!!  My Rudy is a barker and a whiner when he wants attention - but he doesn't howl - neither does Princess Brandy - she just barks and looks the other way - like she is hiding !!!!!

Stormy and Sophie don't howl, but at one point I had three that would.  Nothing else could make them howl but the sound of a harmonica.  I could play any other instrument, sax, clarinet, trumpet, flute and it didn't phase them but let me play anything on the harmonica and within 5 seconds all three of them were howling.  Once they got started it was really hard to get them to quit!

Eileen!  Nice to see you here again!! :apls:  Bummer about your ankle.  Hope it continues to get better.  And Kleine, very happy she is progressing! :hello2:

Madderoo is my talker.....and boy howdy, can she talk, but she doesn't quite HOWL.  I'd call it more advanced squeaking or screeching, especially when her papa sings......even if he isn't singing to her.  It's so funny, she'll give warning and then screech in full throttle.  It's enough to make ya cover your ears!

Dolly does not howl or screech but she will grunt like a pig when she's happy.

Marcia from MI

Neither of mine howl, but Sully Angel use to point his snout to the heavens and bark.  Sam has a whiney voice when he talks to the kitties and Eddie will grunt when he is happy and content.

Angel doesn't exactly howl, but she says "Rooroorooooooo" if she is trying to tell you something and you are not paying attention.  Cassie whines, barks, yips, squeals, and mutters at us... but doesn't really howl.

I had a cocker spaniel who would howl when I played the clarinet (yes, I did improve  :2funny: - she still howled).  She would point her nose at the sky and say, "Arooooooooooo..."

Sorry about the problems you and Kleine have had  :sad10:

Max howls.  Rudy never did.

When Max is left alone, he will "lock up" and start howling about once per minute.   He will not hear you come back, and will continue to howl until he actually sees you.   Then, he just looks up at you like nothing ever happened.

Merion

Our first dachshunds, after Gretel died her brother Hansel started howling when he was left alone. After we got Zeke he stopped. I guess he wasn't lonely anymore.

Dottie will howl like crazy if you say "Yeeeaaaah!"
I have no idea why.  Even whispering it to her
makes her crazy.  She's a hoot.
