Anyone here feed Blue buffalo??
« on: July 02, 2010, 01:12:45 PM »

Porky is dealing with another bout of gastrointestinitis caused by an allergy to something in his dog food.    Doah We are guessing it the soy or the corn.  I know, I know I shouldn't have been feeding such a cheap food, but when you have very limited income sometimes you don't have a choice.  I'm very upset at myself for letting Porky get sick because I bought him a cheap food.    We are hoping to get into the vet this afternoon, but it might be until next Wednesday when they can fit him in.    Doah

Anyway... because of this, I'm thinking of switching to Blue Buffalo dog food.  The fish and rice formula.  I don't know how we will afford it, but I can't see Porky so sick anymore!!   That is the only high quality food I can find locally and I have no credit card, therefore ordering online doesn't work for us.   So... I need to know if what people who have used this food before think of it.

Thanks

Blue Buffalo consistently ranks at the top of the dog food ratings with The Whole Dog Journal. Supposed to be one of the bettert brands you can buy. I've been feeding my crew Taste of The Wild.  Both brands are available at my local Tractor Supply.

Taste of the Wild is just a little less expensive and is costing me $10 a week to feed all 4 dogs.

The Blue Buffalo may cost a little more but you will feed less than the cheap stuff plus fewer vet bills. I'm on Social Security Disability but I still buy Taste of the Wild a big bag a month for Patches & Buddy the 93# Doberman. No vet trips except for shots every three years,Patches to get her teeth cleaned, Lepto shot once a year because of the location where we live. Now the fight for the Fleas not the Dog food may have a vet bill. It might be cheaper if you cook for Porky he is a little guy there are allot of books at the Library you might check out you would know what is in the food you are feeding him.Would be healthy too do not think it would cost that much to feed one little dog.? Good Luck at the vets Rays & Hugs to Porky, hope he feels better soon.

Blue Buffalo is an excellent food for both canines and felines. You may pay a little more for it, but as the others have said it's more economical in the long run because it is such a high quality food that I think you will see overall improvement and fewer downturns. Have you already visited their website? The origins of the food and testimonials are impressive.  Thumbs Up Because my last dachise had to be on RX food for IBD, I don't remember which of the Blue Buffalo canine varieties I've used, but based on their ingredients and processing methods I would recommend them to anyone. I've tried a couple of the feline varieties and am about to start getting it again.

Thanks everyone.  I'm going to do my best to get Porky on this food after his tummy settles down.  Poor little guy is on a special diet until Monday and has 3 different medications.    We have the best vet ever!!  He allowed us to make payment arrangements with only a $20 downpayment.    Applause  Porky is a touch dehydrated, so they gave him an IV for a half hour and instructed me to make him drink at least a tablespoon of food an hour.

When Gizmo my Papillon was a baby she threw up water all the time vet came up with Esophageal Reflux she would act drunk so knew she was super dehydrated.I gave her Pedilite like you give kids, also no sodium beef or chicken broth only a small amount at a time, I used a syringe but you have to be super careful not to get it in their lungs do not want Aspiration Pneumonia that is for sure.Since I was a Nurses aide for ever the medical back ground helped me keep her from having to get IV's.Thought I would let you in on the drunk acting dog/pup may be a sign of the dehydration also if you gentle pull the skin up if it stays also a sign of dehydration. Rays.Licks.Hugs from all of us hoping Porky feels better soon.

sorry to be chiming in late.  I am feeding Blue Buffalo - love that I can get at Petsmart.  Was feeding Solid Gold and it just became too hard to find.  I like the BB varieties and have fed their treats for a loooong time !!!  Did you make the switch?

Barb,  We decided to try Merrik's Whole Earth Farms dog food first.  It seems to be working pretty well and we got a great deal on it from our dog groomer.   She carries BB too, but we can't afford it right now.   I know its really not that pricey, but my hubby faces unemployment for the 2nd time this year, at the end of the month and I'm still searching for a job as well.  Doah  So...saving money is a HUGE concern right now.   Porky has only been on his new food for about 3 weeks, so we are still closely monitoring the allergies and tummy issues to make sure they don't flare up again.

Allergies and tummies are so hard to manage because you never know for sure what will set them off. And so many variables to consider. Like each ingredient of the dog food, etc. Hallie is doing great on the Hills WD (I hate feeding her Hills but no choice right now) but I don't know if it really is the food or if she would have gotten better anyway...she goes through spells regardless.

I'm so sorry you are both having to worry about work I thought you were starting an at home job?

Have heard its a pretty good food some Doberman people use it.One thing you should consider with any packaged dog foods is once in awhile they change where they get an ingredient from maybe the same ingredient but from a different location. That can also mess up a dog too some are super sensitive to any and all ingredients.Hope Porky gets to feeling better soon and you can find a food that will work for Porky.

The job thing is a long story Dee Dee.   Basically I had a job offer from a company and wasted 2 months trying to wait for them to get their technical glitches fixed, only to be told they gave the job to someone else because they thought it was an issue with my computer.  It turns out it was their system causing the issue.  They apologized, but it was aggravating that I don't have a job after wasting all that time on them!!!    So...I'm doing the whole application/resume thing all over again.     Doah
