What is IVDD

I know I'm not gonna spell it right: Inter-vertabral disc disease.  There's a website called Doger's List that outlines the causes (mostly the mutated--bred for long and low--spine of the doxie) symptoms, treatments, treatment outcomes, etc.  Interesting if somewhat scary read.  BUT!  If you want to know what the warning signs are you really should.


I just wanted to see how many of our little circle of dogs had suffered and had surgery and from the brief poll, it sure looks like surgical intervention is a good treatment.  Even our pal, Cliffie, who has had I think THREE surgeries (?) still has complete mobility and he's at least 10 or 11 years old.

I wish Clifford was only 10 or 11, but he turned 14 in May.  He had lumbar surgery after paralysis but still deep tissue feeling in his toes at age 5 3/4 (2000).  Cervical surgery at 7 3/4 (2002) followed by 3rd surgery also cervical 6 weeks later for only disc not able to be fenestrated through the throat.  All afflicted discs had ruptured.  He had a 90% recovery from lumbar and complete recovery from cervical. 

He has been steadily losing hind quarter mobility the past 6 months and now often loses his balance when walking.  Neck pain has been sporadic but ongoing for several years.  Massage seems to help somewhat.

These days he is happy to find someplace soft and warm to snooze.

surgery, massage, heat, and chiropractics... took about 1.5 years to be relatively pain-free
now a little stiff, like most old-timers, but still acts like puppy more than her should

Conrad aged 8 years, 9 months.
     First ruptured lumbar disk at 4 years old. Complete paralysis w/ deep pain. Surgery with complete recovery.
     Second ruptured lumbar disk at almost 5 years old. No paralysis, but major neurological disorder. Surgery with about 90% recovery.
     Third ruptured lumbar disk at around 6 years old. Complete paralysis, delayed pain sensation (but could have been due to anasthesia from MRI). Surgery with about
     85-90% recovery.

Finnious aged 8 years, 9 months.
     First ruptured lumbar disk at 5 years old. Complete paralysis w/ deep pain. Surgery with complete recovery.
     Second ruptured disk - cervical at around 6 years old. No paralysis but severe pain. Surgery with complete recovery.
     Currently having a back ache. Hopefully, accupuncture, pain meds, and crate rest will do the trick this time around.

Lily had lumbar rupture at 5 1/2 years old with complete recovery after surgery.  She was partially paralyzied with deep pain.  She has a cute little wiggle in her walk now, but otherwise, impossible to tell she ever had any issues.

my mother swears by it I used to take angel Emma in the last few years of her life and it helped her a lot. don't know how it works but it does she went from unable to go up a few steps to go up easily it up. DEe Dee might benifit from it.

My granddog Hoover just had surgery about a month ago. He was not down but in pain and wobbly. After an xray showed he had 4 disk that were degenerating. So we did fenstration surgery where they repaired 10 disc as precaution. The week after surgery Hoover went completely down and he scared us to death. We did water theraphy and acupuncture and after a month he's about 90% we are going to continue acupuncture another month or so and are still hoping for a 100%. The surgeon was Dr. Smith in Tulsa OK, VA Vet clinic there is awesome and thanks to someone here and my wonderful adopters his vet bill is almost paid in full.
