General Writings / Brekke turned 14 yesterday
Last post by Brekkesmom - July 06, 2015, 07:30:46 PM
Hi, gang!  She had her traditional birthday breakfast of scrambled egg and dog biscuits, an afternoon treat of a fresh baby carrot, a bite of the rotisserie chicken I had cooling on the counter, and Merrick's has a new canned food that is over 90% duck, so that went on the kibble.

She is now 14 months post-surgery on her back, and I actually got to meet some of the people who did Gretl-Angel's surgery back in 1999!  Brekke had cold laser therapy, hot rock treatments, and physical therapy for 10 days, and considering she's had a luxating patella on her right rear, she  gets around quite well - especially if food or treats are involved!

DeeDee was pretty miserable for a while, but she did go through a lot of photos and picked out some wonderful pics of Hallie-Angel and posted them on her Facebook wall.  A few weeks ago, she adopted a little black-and-white Havanese puppy now named Sophie.  She even managed to get a picture of Sophie running as Hallie had done, and posted them side-by-side with ears flying and the same front paw in air.  Sophie is about 4 months old, and Dee Dee has already potty-trained her, so it sounds like she is on the mend, while still missing her little Rembrandt.

Health Concerns / Re: Patches & Frogs
Last post by David C. - May 13, 2015, 09:12:44 PM
There's probably not much you can do about it but be vigilant.  Dachshunds are predatory animals.   My first pair, Rudy & Max, used to get into a lot of trouble with toads.   The toads weren't poisonous, but they do have an alkali substance on their skin which made both dogs foam up every time they grabbed one.    One time with Max, he ingested some and it gave him a nasty case of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which necessitated a trip to the emergency vet.   Max bounced back and lived another 12 years after that incident until he passed at 17 1/2.

Rudy was even more predatory than Max.   Basically, Rudy's world was divided up into three categories:   Humans, those nice things that gave him food and pet him,  Other dogs...ones that he would bark at or try to prove ascendancy over, regardless of size, and Prey.   It could have been a bug, a frog, a bird, a deer or a horse.  It didn't matter to Rudy.

In short, try to keep Patches away from these critters, and if he does catch one, try to wash his mouth out ASAP.

Wow that's different.

My Simon in his younger days went for rabbits right in the hole, frogs might simply be a substitute to satisfy that instinct.

I was never able to get Simon to not behave this way and finally just excepted it.

Last post by papbouv - May 03, 2015, 02:51:42 PM
Patches is Nine Years old should with doing this my husband has taken 4-6 Frogs away from her he throws them over the cement wall. Today I was out picking up the dog presents (poop) looked up and Patches was eating something. I yelled at her to drop it she took off she ate a live frogs back leg off at the hip joint area ? Here in Oklahoma I do not think the Frogs are poisonous like the ones in Florida but anyone have any ideas on how to get her to stop Frog hunting on her own ???
Thanks for any ideas.

Hi Everybody,
I know it's been a while since I've been on here! Well anyway I'm sure all of you heard about the Tornadoes that hit here Thursday!
Well anyway I'm only about 10 miles from Ashton Illinois! As soon as my sister got home from work we all hot footed it to the basement
puppies included! We hunkered down there for a couple hours and was glued to the local channels and the national weather channel until
      it was all over!   Kelly

Amorette posts dalily, and it seems that Cash is doing better.  Here's is her last post about 19 hours ago.

Cash is still hating his BiPaP mask and fights against it by breathing faster than the puff of air. We have to keep him sedated with Ativan and Clonodine just to keep him from freaking out. When he is awake he is pushing on the mask trying to get it off. The respiratory therapists and ENT team think he is probably ready for high flow oxygen, but NICU team is being extra cautious and waiting. Cash has a flexible laryngoscope tomorrow so ENT can take a look at his vocal cords and make sure the swelling and scar tissue still looks reduced. Then they may insist in getting rid of the mask if it looks good. Without their insistence he would probably still be on the breathing tube. I really am enjoying their hard work and advocating to fix Cash's airway. They have been amazing at explaining everything. Our attending doctor this week in the NICU always ends rounds by getting my opinion in any changes they have suggested and if I'm not on board or have other ideas, they change the plan
