Most of you who are on the board remember Max-angel (1989 - 2006), and many of you remember how I ended up with him. He belonged to the family of my bandleader. I used to babysit him when they went on vacation, and it left such an impression on me that I got my own dachshund, Rudy. Their daughter developed such severe asthma that they had to get Max out of the house. I ended up taking him in on February 7, 1993.
Fast forward nearly 22 years: I still play in the same band, and the original family has had three more children. The oldest child who had the asthma issues thankfully outgrew them. She is now a third-year law student at the University of Maryland in Baltimore The youngest child (14) and their mother came to watch Jessica one evening for us. They were so smitten by the Zs, and Zora in particular, that they decided they were going to get a dog.
Of course, they didn't tell me, so I nearly fell out of my chair when I received an e-mail from the DRNA asking for a reference. So, now nearly 22 years after they gave up Max, they are hopefully going to be welcoming another dachshund into their midst. You can bet that the Zs are going to have the new character over for a play date. Best off, the line continues...Rudy & Max had spent time with Zeke and Zora, and now the Zs will spend time with their new dachshund, and the circle which started with Max almost 26 years ago will finally come full circle.
That's great news and a testimony for the breed.
What a wonderful story !!!! Ditto to what Mike said !!! Once you have one, you just can't have one !
Great story David
Love it. We all know what great dogs these little guys are!!!!
The family did adopt a dark red smoothie from DRNA name Pancho. Pancho was found as a stray in South Carolina and was in a kill shelter where only 3% of the dogs get adopted. He appears to be between 1 and 2 years old, although I think he is closer to the 1 than the 2. Whoever his previous owner was, they were probably not very nice to him. Pancho is extremely fearful of new people, particularly males, although over time he will warm up to them. He has made good progress since first coming to his forever home.
When I went to meet him, he seemed genuinely curious about me, but couldn't seem to overcome his fear. I think both time and love will heal his psychological wounds. We're going to bring the Zs over to help "model" for him and show him that it's okay to be social with people.
Hooray for Pancho. He might have thought you smelled good with the scent of the Z's on your clothes.
The Zs got their opportunity to meet Pancho. The three of them hit it off right off the bat. It looked like Pancho was thrilled to be around two dachshunds. That helped bring him out his shell. Not only did Pancho now let me pet him, but he also let me pick him up. Pancho became jealous when Zeke would start interacting with Pancho's hooman family and he would try to push Zeke out of the way. You forget just how energetic young dachshunds are!
