I'm in need of help. My doxie Logan, injured himself Monday rendering his hind end pretty much useless. Since then, he hasn't had a poo. I've tried the ice cube trick as well as a vasoline q-tip inserted to get things going. Both activated his muscles as they should, but with no poo success. I've also given him coconut oil in hopes it would loosen things up. He hasn't seemed to have lost any bit of his appetite but it's starting to scare me that he hasn't yet poo'ed. If anybody has any other suggestions, they'd be greatly appreciated.
I am so sorry to hear Logan is injured. It sounds like he urgently needs to see the vet, minutes count in spinal injuries, has he already been seen and is he on medications and crate rest? A long time has past since Monday so I sincerely hope he has seen a vet by now.
He may be partially paralized and in considerable pain. With medication, restriction of movement and help from the vet you may be able to express his bowels since he is unlikely to be able to poo on his own and dosing him with oils etc. will just cause more discomfort and accumulation inside.
Poor little fellow, please let us know how he is getting on and what your vet says, sorry your New Year started so badly.

Yes I'm working with my vet. He was prescribed prednisone but due to the aspirin that was in his system, the start of that had to be suspended. The ice cube and q-tip tricks I was referring to, was my trying to express his bowels. I've tried multiple times with no success. I was able to express his bladder for the most part. I'm calling the vet this a.m. Coconut oil is actually very healthy for bowel function. He has been passing gas quite a bit, which tells me things are moving in there, just no poo yet. :(I
Ouch! That's not the way to start a new year. Years ago Clifford, my 1st dachsie, blew a lumbar disc which required emergency surgery. Afterward while crated it took 8 days before he pooped. I had called the surgeon with my concern just 30 minutes prior and was told if he's eating he will eventually have a bowel movement. Rays heading out for Logan. Please keep us updated on how he is doing.

Yah I talked to the vet again today and he's going in tonight to get checked out. They may give him an enema which I would be appreciative of, just to see him get some relief. He's eating plenty of fresh foods (raw beef liver, homemade bone broth, cooked chicken livers, coconut oil and flax seed) that promote joint support, inflammation reduction and help promote healthy bowel function. Epsom salt baths seem to help a little with the soreness. He isn't quite as tender in the hip area afterward. Just waiting to get him on his prednisone. I need him to get better. I can't stand seeing him so frustrated. Thank you for your well wishes. <3
Rays & Hugs to your Fur Kid hope things come out soon for his sake.
Logan had another vet appointment yesterday. After not so great news on Thursday night, (he thought Logan would never regain the use of his hind legs due to fact he had absolutely no feeling in his hind end), we decided not to give up hope. We had to wait 3 days to start him on his prednisone, on account of the aspirin that was in his system. Thursday night, doctor have him a dmso shot. Friday morning we started his prednisone. By Friday night, we had noticed he moved his back leg and spread his toes. These were things that he wasn't able to do since Monday night. I found myself staring at him all night to see if he'd move again.. Anyway, his appointment went really well Saturday morning. Doctor pinched his toes (like on Thursday night) and Logan reacted! :D He tried to pull his feet away, very lightly, but still showed some signs of feeling. Vet saw this as very hopeful. He also noticed how hard he had to push to express his bladder which he saw as a sign that he does have some bladder tone. He received another dmso shot mixed with.. dexamethasone? I think that's it..? He has also pooped 3 times since then without stimulation. I'm so happy to see improvement. Thank you for your well wishes!

Things are going so well! Logan is now able to urinate on his own again. He's also taking steps, wobbly steps but walking nonetheless. We purchased him a wheelchair to help compensate with some mobility but things are definitely looking up. Thanks for your well wishes. <3
