Post by: papbouv on September 14, 2013, 08:47:34 PM
Buddy my Doberman is bald again on one side just like last year and the year before so called the Veterinary Dermatologist here in Tulsa asked what the office visit was smooth as silk the lady said $85.00 then it is usually about $200.00 for tests. I told her thank you very much unable to afford that. I'm giving him Benadryl generic, Cephalexin 500mg ( which was mine) and a Melatonin so hope that helps then got some Calming Spray from Burt's Bees. At least Patches is doing well at present  hubby likes Patches so gives monies for her vet care he does not like Buddy so he is just up a creek. Non of the specialist I have ever went too cost that much as I have said before one day only the rich can have pets.papbouv

Poor buddy.  Yikes I would have fainted at that dprice quote too.  We have found salmon oil has helped with skin allergies and hair loss in the past.  I am sure it would not to any harm and will not ne too expensive.  Good luck and let us know how Buddy gets on.

I remember when Maddie was having skin issues, we took her in.  They talked me into allergy testing.  $500.00 later and "treatment" and she was still a mess.  It did end up clearing up on its own.  Just a bad year for itchies.  We had carpet then.  Probably something like bedbugs only carpet bugs.  Maybe some aloe vera for Buddy?

If things change will keep you in the loop.

After Clifford's first back surgery years ago it was suggested I try using SeaMeal from Solid Gold for his hair and skin.  It seemed to help along with getting him off the Vet recommend nasty food.   I sprinkled it on his no-salt green beans.  Here is the link for a little info.

I used to take my mini doxie (11 lbs) to the vet at least twice a summer for bloody hot spots/hair loss and itching.  Cost $85 for visit plus medicine. A former Vet Tech told me to give her Tavist, antihistimine..  I asked my pharmacist about what doseage would be proper for her size.  He said that animals tolerate human medicines better than humans do.  You have to ask the pharmacist for Tavist because it is not on shelves any more.  They order it for me in bottles of 100.  Costs about $28.00.  I give Abby 1 pill each day during the summer.  Never had to take her back to the vet for the skin condition again.  Hair came back just fine.  Be sure to order plain Tavist - NOT Tavist-D.

On the other hand, if your Buddy has a type of mange, Tavist will not help, probably.  You will need antibiotics big time.  Could be linked to food allergies.  If you changed Buddy's food, you might watch what ingredients are prevalent -- especially corn.  Omega 3 Fish Oil is great for them.  Good luck!  Hope Buddy gets better soon.
