Title: Patches trip to the vet's
Post by: papbouv on June 18, 2013, 10:14:21 PM
Hi I did take Patches to the vet seems to think Patches has a herniated cervical disk of course she did not do any screaming for the vet. But screamed when I had her standing on the counter while filling out the check. I'm sure every one heard her he gave her a pain shot and 5 pain pills which I have to cut in half so good till Monday then we will see how she is if worse she is suppose to go back to the vet's.He said he would do X-rays or CT scan I'm hoping we will not have to do that really can't afford a CT scan they are so expensive.

I hope she starts feeling lots better soon!  :xfinger: Porky got better quickly with just the pills and crate rest.  He does still have an episode every now and then, so our vet sent us home with some extra pills to keep on hand.  We never went the x-ray or CT scan route, so I hope you don't have to either.  Carry her everywhere when she is not in her crate and hopefully you see improvement.  Porky's clue to his back hurting is shaking like he is cold and a hard tummy with slightly arched back.   If he gets hurting worse that's when the random screams start.  I try to catch his pain early, on the rare occasion he has it, so I can get him a pill and prevent it from escalating.   Sending lots of prayers for you and Patches!!    If its possible, don't let her walk down (or up) the stairs at all.

Patches had another screaming episode this evening I took her outside put the gate up went inside for a minute Buddy in the garage with the gate up so he could not go into the back yard where Patches was. I heard Patches screaming she was in the same place where I left her just standing there screaming her head off very unsettling she had 1/2  25mg Rimadyl at 6:30pm the screaming happened at about 7:00pm ?  Thinking of just putting her to sleep she is only 7 years old may go back to the vet for different medications tramadol maybe predisone ????The only medication the vet gave us is a shot of Rimadyl & 5pills ??? Called the vets office after 7:00pm the vet on call called me back said I could give her another1/2pill but she soon settled down so did not. Know she is suppose to be crated but all she does is sit in the crate shaking and panting really bad think that is more stressful for her need a wire crate Buddy's too big no place to set it up with his bed in my bedroom. Patches use to go get in her crate no problem then about a year or so ago she freaked out in it have not been making her use it.??? Wish I knew someone with a smaller all wire crate our crate is a plastic one. What kind ofmedication is Porky taking for his back lower back or neck ???? Papbouv Thanks for any information.

I know how hard it is to see your baby like that!!  I remember crying for several days!!  I even cried at the vet.    :comfort:  I really hope the medicine starts helping Patches, poor baby.     Porky was given 1/2 a 25 mg Rimadyl as well.  It did take a few days before I noticed any improvement, so don't give up on her just yet.  It does take a while for this medicine to do its job.  Porky had two 5 day rounds of it before he felt good enough to be off the medicine.  Like I said before, now we just use it on an as needed basis.  As long as she is very still, no walking around, jumping, running, etc... she should be okay out of her crate if its less stressful.  I let Porky lay on my lap, as long as he laid straight and stayed sill.  If he started to shift around, I took him potty and then to his crate.    Having him in there crying was pure torture, but I knew it was necessary to help him feel better.  These little dogs are stronger than we think, so give the medicine a chance to work.  I'm not judging you no matter what you decide to do for your baby though.  You will have my full support no matter what.
