Title: The Bratpak
Post by: Bratpak and Lauri on December 27, 2012, 10:50:45 PM
Hey everywiener and hooman!

We hope you are all well and had a lovely festive season

It's been too long since we've been visiting here.  Other than missing Tommie and Jessie very much, we are doing great down here in SA...  Simson and Heino are still going strong, both had their teefies done recently and came through well.... just a little concern for Simson's liver and kidneys...  Simson is 14 and Heino 12!

I got Simson Milk Thistle as a liver supplement but cannot find a trustworthy source of the therapeutic dose for dogs...  Anyone using this?  I converted the human dose on the label it to match Simson's weight, but some websites advises only 50% of the human dose for dogs?  Any thoughts on this?

Lauri, Simson, Heino

Great to hear from you !!!

I gave my Brandy Milk Thistle for years.  I bought the capsules (I don't remember the mg- I think 1000?) - actually I bought it at Walmart.  It was yellow power and I would open each capsule and give her 1/2 of the powder each day, sprinkled on her food.  It was yellow.  Brandy weighed about 10-11 lbs.

I also gave her SamE  (also a good liver supplement)  which you can buy over the counter.  It came in tablet form and I would get the 200 mg and give her 1/2 each day.

Three answers from Doberman Talk
1.) dogs not suffering acute liver disease is 75-100mg per 10 # of weight per day.
2.)Here is a useful article:

Milk Thistle

You can also look at the ingredients in Marin and Denamarin to find out the ratio of active ingredient to dog weight. Just google the medications - it used to show the full copy of the leaflet enclosed with the drug.

3.) I give Sweep a large dog 425mg of SAMe & 35mg silybin A & B

Hope this might help hope it does not confuse you more trying to be helpful hope this helped

Hello Lauri!!  So good to hear from you.  Looks like you've got some good answers to your questions.  Are you kiddos THAT OLD??  Makes ME feel old.  My Miss Bonnie or as Mark calls her, Bunny Rabbit is doing well, though she doesn't much care for a three ring circus these days and I can always count on her being in the exact place I left her in the morning when I come home for lunch during the week.  She sez...."Give a senior wiener a break!  I'm 14 years old and am enjoying my retirement.  Um, can you bring me a treat?"

No treats for the Bunny tonight as she already treated herself to some poop.  This is a recent thing and I'm not real pleased about it.  EWWWWWWW.

Pineapple trick has been around for years also Victoria Stillwell the dog trainer that was on TV she had it on her show a few times cheaper than the Forbid that is on Foster & Smith pet catalog also if you ask your vet they usually have something to give the poop eater.

Patty in Alaska recommended the Original Adolph's meat tenderizer sprinkled on food - with the papain (from pineapple).  I used 1/4 tsp, I think, but not sure if that's because of body weight.  (Hi, Laurie!  Hi, Patty!)
