Title: Does anyone else have a dachsie who bites and "grooms" their own toenails?
Post by: BonniesMom on December 11, 2012, 11:18:51 PM
Bonnie is a toenail biter.  Must take after her mommy as I am a lifetime nail biter.  Anyway, she has one back toenail that, thanks to Bonnie's grooming, has now grown gnarled and splits very easily.  Usually I take her to our Groomer across the street but it looks so awful that I'm going to have Dr. Kevin look at it tomorrow and see what he says or see if he can cut away more than our Groomer can.  Bonnie is constantly chewing on her back feet but she doesn't seem in pain or anything.  I'll be interested to hear what our Vet says about this.

UPDATE!  Bonnie's problem nail isn't a problem.....I hope....any longer.  It was split quite into the quick so we opted to remove it completely.  A quick snooze and clip while she's out, a butt squeeze (quite full) and an ear cleaning.  The bright green bandage that my little girl sported lasted for about 5 minutes so she is now in her cone of shame.  She got a long lasting antibiotic because the nail was really infected.  These little dogs are soooo stoic about pain.  We didn't know it was infected.

Bonnie sez-----This has been a TERRIBLE day and I hate this innertube around my neck.  Someone please come and rescue me.  I am a sad sad puppy dawg.

Mommy sez-----So sad.  She's sleeping now and snoring.

It was starting to rain pretty good when we were about to leave so Dr. Kevin's wife gave us a ride home.  Isn't that nice?  Now hopefully we won't have to worry about that nasty toenail.

Now it's MY turn to be treated.  Off to get my back adjusted and then a massage.  My back is doing its stupid back ache thing that creeps in about every 4 months.  Anyone got a new back for me to try?

Duggie is my toenail biter/ trimmer and he waits to do it after we are all settled in bed at night.  I still take him into see Nicole for toe trims.  Sarge-Angel had a toe nail removed several years ago when he somehow managed to rip it partially out while chasing a rabbit I the yard.

Hugs and belly rubs to Bonnie.

Buddy & Patches have all black nails I think they grow like weeds I hate them I have a Dremel for Patches and one for Buddy but here recently Mr. Arther has been visiting my hands so now behind on the nails. Took them both to the vets for nail trims so I hope to get them short again on Doberman talk they say to put Hemorrhoid cream on the nail it will make the quick recede back shorter ? I may try that too. Want to try to get them show short so I can just do them once a week in the future instead of twice a week.

I have heard many a times that people bytes the nails of their hands but biting the nails of the toes sounds quite irritating.
