Chicken Jerky RecallThe Denver-based company Tuesday urged pet owners to return 2.5-pound packages of Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats purchased at one of 57 Sam’s Club stores. The product, marked with the bar code 647263800208 and a best-buy date of 091913 DEN, was distributed in Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.

The Food and Drug Administration detected salmonella during a test of the lot, the company stated.

No animal or human illnesses were reported in connection with the product, Kasel added.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning in pets include lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. People who handle contaminated pet products may show similar symptoms.

Recalled Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. More information is available by calling Kasel at 800-218-4417 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday.

The recall followed one announced last week involving 6-count, 5-inch Boots & Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks. Some of the sticks, distributed at Target stores from April through September under the bar code 647263899189, tested positive for salmonella. Read more>>

DogsButterA nationwide limited recall of peanut butter made by Sunland Inc. has snared a pet company, Dog for Dog, which issued a voluntary recall of all its jarred Dogsbutter.

Portales, N.M.-based Sunland initially recalled 75 almond butter and peanut butter products, including some made for grocers such as Trader Joe’s, Fresh & Easy and Sprouts, because of possible Salmonella contamination.  The manufacturer expanded the recall Monday to include 25 additional products containing cashew butter, tahini or roasted blanched peanuts.

The voluntary recall began after 29 people reportedly contracted Salmonella-type illnesses in 18 states, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated.

Dog for Dog of Santa Monica, Calif., joined the voluntary recall though no animal illnesses were reported, CEO Rocky Keever said today.

“While no Dogsbutter products have tested positive for Salmonella, our No. 1 focus is ensuring the health, safety and well-being of dogs,” Keever said.

“We’d much rather be overly cautious,” he added. “We’re not knowledgeable enough in the peanut market, so we just pulled it.”

All the recalled products may be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund, Sunland and Keever noted.

Dog for Dog also sells Dogsbar nutrition bars, which are not included in the recall.

The Sunland recall involves products manufactured from May 1 through Monday.

Boots and Barkley Bully SticksKasel Associated Industries recalled all lots of its Boots & Barkley 6-Count, 5-Inch American Beef Bully Sticks after several lots tested positive for Salmonella.

The product was distributed through Target stores in the United States from April through September 2012. The sticks come in a clear plastic bag marked with bar code number 647263899189.

Kasel opted to recall the products after routine sampling by the Colorado Department of Agriculture revealed that four lots were contaminated with Salmonella. Kasel ceased production and distribution of the product while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the company investigate the source of the contamination.

Pets suffering from a Salmonella infection may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may have only a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected by otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and may infect other animals or people.
Owners of pets that ate the recalled products and are displaying symptoms of Salmonella poisoning should contact their veterinarian, the company said.

People infected with Salmonella may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Salmonella also can cause more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers who handled the recalled products and are exhibiting signs of Salmonella infection should contact a health care provider.
The recalled product may be returned to the store for a refund.

Anyone with questions may contact Kasel at 800-218-4417 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. MDT weekdays.
