Title: Buddy & Patches & the Heat
Post by: papbouv on July 31, 2012, 07:36:49 PM
They hate to go outside the lowest temperature was 88 * degrees last night today 111* not sure what the heat index was some said it was 113*-114* thats in the shade not out in the sun. I put out fresh water every day then I stop at the refrigerator on the way out to the back door putting a couple of ice cubes in each bowl. Figure it will cool the water some without being ice water which I heard was not good for dogs. Buddy is done with his antibiotic s now he just has about 3-4 Predisone left we are on the every other day. Then only time will tell if he is done with his licking & chewing cycle.
Patches scared me today she screamed out at 3 different times no one was near her I did the foot test all feets returned to normal position quickly will just keep an eye on her. Its been too hot to walk them last time we went for a walk my Achilles Tendon had fits still does off and on can't win. If anyone has any spare Rays could use them on Patches hoping it was just one of those quirky things that happen and she will be OK. Patches, Buddy & papbouv

Now that is HOT. I hope you guys cool down soon! And lots of Rays for Patches hopefully like you said only a one time flukey thing. Sounds like Buddy has been having some allergy issues...hope that clears up too. They can sure keep us on our toes.

Sounds like you're doing your best for keeping 'em cool.  Maybe a nice moist toweling down will add to their comfort.  I use a hand towel and wet it, wring it out and wrap lightly around long dog.  Of course, we have been  unseasonably cool here this year so I haven't had to worry about a overheated wiener.

Kisses to Buddy and Patches.

take a couple of milk jugs, fill them with water and freeze them.  place them near there beds or areas where they sleep and lay down.  it will create a little cool micro climate near those areas

That's an awesome idea.

Poor little Patches girl.  She's having a rough time.  Give her some kisses for me.

Thanks for the ideas but the guy's hog the AC all the time outside maybe 20 minutes tops, I run a ceiling fan 24/7 most times at night run another fan also its my white noise can't sleep with out it.Worked night shift for 25 years so got use to fan noise, the dogs park under the vents ours are in the ceiling so they can't lay on top of them.Today weather people said 110*-116* no one knows for sure just depends on what channel you are listening too. One channel did say we are the hottest place in the USA we are hotter than Death Valley going top stay that way pretty much for the whole month of August most likely September too. They said we have a small chance for rain so I hope we get rain then we may go in the 100's ??? Patches did not yell today thank goodness hope it stays that way, thanks for the rays.papbouv

Ouch!  August of 1983 was very hot here, too - we had weeks of temps like you are having.  I had no dachsies then, but I vaguely remember how uncomfortable it was outdoors.  We had rolling power outages to help control electricity use, and you just prayed that your area was not out around 3 to 5 - which is when we get the heat of the day.  Have you seen those little collars that you dampen and put in the fridge for a time and then they velcro around dogs' necks?  I have one for Brekke, since the heat is harder on her. This one is called Outward Hound.  I hear you about the water - I do the same thing with the ice.  Cooling rays from southern CA heading your way!

Now have fires all over the place one article in todays newspaper said a volunteer fire fighter started 7 fires because he was in the service and he missed being with the other fire fighters. Need to string him up in a tree and let him be in the fire's path yeah i know I went over board on that one but stuff like that makes me mad. Hard working people have lost their homes because of that idiot. They say just going into a field, your exhaust system on your car or truck can start a fire,We have deep cracks in our back yard all the grass is dead. Now started water rationing you can only water going by your address odd on odd days even on even days.I just finely talked hubby into watering the two trees we have he does not believe in Landscaping.?At least the trees got watered two days in a row may get rain they say i sure hope so. Its 102-106* now seems like they cannot make up their minds depends on what channel you are looking at. OK seems like Dachshund Rays work well please all Dachshund Rays for Rain in Oklahoma thanks.Papbouv,Patches & Buddy

Smoke even a little ash in the air the fire is about 35 miles away from Tulsa every time the AC comes on it pulls in the smoke smell right at first. Trying to stay inside as much as possible leaving the dogs in to as much as possible awhile ago at 6:00pm they said it was 107* on one TV channel the heat index 111* feel sorry for the fire people.
