Taffy is absolutely chewing everything, but when she chews thru her new harnesses and her leashes while on her :doah: . I think I have a real problem here!! I just put her blanket on the floor and took her wicker basket away because she was pulling pieces of that loose and chewing on it.
I am headed back to the pet store to replace the new harness I just bought and she chewed almost in half...yes, while it was on her! Then she turned and got the leash in her mouth. I bought another leash...one that lets her run 20 ft..one of the retractable ones, put it on in the house to try it, and she had it in her mouth in no time.
She has several toys; I keep rawhide bones handy to replace whatever she is chewing on, and I don't let her chew them into tiny pieces. Larry says she is teething. She's 11 months old. She even grabs my clothes and pulls on them now. Am I raising a monster now? :dontknow: HELP!!
I know someone else must have gone thru this. Why all of a sudden is she determined to go after everything?
I'm interested to hear feedback on this one as well. I don't have a problem with Charlie, but Abbie (my golden retriever) looks to chew on some things if I don't watch her closely. I asked the vet if she was going through a second chewing phase since she's 9 months old, but the vet said it was just a bad habit beginning to develop. After postings regarding the rawhides and greenies, I'm wondering what's safe for my pups to chew on.
Bridget was a 1st degree chewer as a puppy and drove me nuts! :BangHead: We were firm with her, and she surprised all of us by outgrowing it at about 18 months. I had pretty much written off ever wearing matching shoes again, when suddenly, she just....... stopped.
Cajsa was a chewer/eater of everythign as a puppy. She would eat/chew through wires, videos, beds/blankets, pretty much anything she got near her mouth. I got a Kong for her and she would chew on it for ages. (She never liked any other rubber toy though, maybe it was the treats she associated with the Kong?) AS for the kitchen chairs and such I tried bitter apple spray and had mixed results. It worked on some thigns but not others. It didn't work on wires. I got just plain rubbing alcohol and soaked a piece of cloth in it then wiped down the wires to the TV, VCR, DVD player and all the lamps, etc. She followed me around and watched me do it and I let her smell the rag. She never touched them again. I only had to do it once, but it may be something that should be repeated with every dusting. Not sure what to do about soft surfaces though.
I've tried something called "off paw" that has actually worked pretty well, but you've got to reapply it every 24-hours. The only thing it doesn't seem to keep Abbie from chewing on are the knob handles to my entertainment center.
I don't have a suggestion about how to stop the chewing, but I suggest going online and ordering a Lupine harness/collar and leash. They will replace (for free) any harness/collar and leash that your dog chews thru. I have personally had to do this with Lily. Lily has out grown a lot of her chewing issues.
Hmmmm........well, puppies are going to chew. Willy and Alex chewed their way through three dog beds before they grew out of it. I'd come home to a kitchen full of chewed up bedding, and those two had such proud looks on their faces. I was thankful it was only their bed, and not the table or chair legs, the linoleum or my shoes (you gotta choose your battles). Try getting her a big knuckle bone and smear it with peanut butter and freeze it. Make it real appealing for her to chew on certain things and she may forget about chewing up collars and leashes. How old is she? I believe with time she will grow out of it, and will then enjoy only chewing on the good stuff like marrow bones. I don't like to give my dogs pig ears and rawhide chews, I didn't think that they should be ingesting that much leather, besides, even though the dogs loved them, they would throw up later. I had a doxie almost choke to death when a piece of a chewie got caught in his throat. I do buy the big, long, hard rawhide sticks, and monitor the dogs very carefully. I throw the stick out when it gets too short. I feel safest giving them frozen marrow bones stuffed with cottage cheese and peanut butter. See my post "A Safe Treat."
One other thought........ Bridget never outgrew chewing on her harness. I have to use just a regular collar with her. She will still make quick work of any harness I try to put on her. Her record is 25 minutes to chew completely through a nylon harness.
3 words: BITTER APPLE SPRAY Available at all pet shops.
spray it on ewverything you don't want yer kid to chew. Doesn't stain! When Zu was a pup I sprayed the entire house from 24" down, I swear. Baskets, wires, rug fringe, shoes, anything!
My first dachsie, Dixie was the CHEW QUEEN. She ate wicker, carpet, walls, doors. You name it, she ate it. I happened upon a non-destructible bed quite accidentally. I was at Home Depot and saw these hard plastic cement troughs. It was low enough so that she could get in and out. It was quite roomy for a tweener wiener and it was truly indescructible! I saw chew marks but she couldn't tear it up. Might want to give something like that a try instead of the wicker or soft beds. Be sure to put lots of blankies in it to make it soft.
We've had good luck w/ an occasional baby asprin -1/2- because their little gums hurt like crazy, and an old sock, tied in knots, frozen wet. Not as messy as it sounds, and they love the crunchy, squishy feel on their gums. Obviously, you need to watch your pupper while they have the frozen sock, in case they are a shredder. I used to do 4 or 5 for the freezer, in ziplocks, then let one thaw a bit before I gave it to them. Good luck, chewers are a trial, but it does pass!
It won't stop chewing ....... but try buying LUPINE harness, leads and collars ......... they have a great life time "no questions asked " guarantee. They have replaced 2 harnesses and a lead for me ....... each time it cost only $1.25 in postage to return the item.
