Taffy is chewing everything in sight, including her wicker basket, which I took away from her today; her harness, leashes.....  I am giving her rawhide bones, but keeping an eye on her, and picking up pieces and taking away small bits.

She will never see a greenie. :cussing:

WOW  Thanks for the info.  Looks like it's toothbrushes for cleaning teeth, and something a little different for treats from now on

  Anyone have any ideas on what to give pups to chew on?  I'm trying to gear away from the rawhides, mostly because Charlie will hoard them even if I give a second one to Abbie.  They seemed to have gotten use to the greenies by taking them to respective corners.  I'm not so much concerned with Charlie not having a chew toy because he's way beyond the chewing stage, but Abbie seems to want to chew everything in sight.

I've only given 1 greenie each to my girls over the past 4 yrs because I've heard nothing but bad things about them...so what I give my girls are bully sticks...and I buy the 12 inch ones not the 6 inch...I find the 6 inch is too small for them...and they will chew on one of those for days...they love em...I buy them online on ebay...I purchase only from one seller on there too..actually I just bought another big bag of them from her this week...if you'd like her ebay store I'll post it for you guys....On occasion I will purchase the Nylabones and the Booda Bones also in the largest size ...and when they get the bully sticks and the others chewed down to about 2 inches I throw them out..I've never had a problem with my girls with any of these products...

I"ve given GReenies to Cajsa in the past, but not recently due to her restricted diet.  She's had her stomach pumped several times for eating different things and on occasion we've found pieces of greenie in the contents as well as the offending object (like flower bulbs, wires, etc.)
She has always chewed them off in small enough pieces so that they couldn't cause blockages.  I would imagine some dogs do that and others don't...  If you wanted to give Greenies to freshen breath but were afraid of blockages I'd say you could try the "bits" instead since they are in very small pieces.

My computer at work is being difficult and I could not open the file.  In a nutshell, what does the article say?

Basically that greenies are 100% edible, but 85% digestable.  A lot of times they will block the intestines, and the dog will require major surgery to remove the blockage, or worst case DIE from the blockage.  Especially if the dog doesnt chew them into small enough pieces.  It was a sad story.

THANK YOU Terri!! I have been giving Hallie greenies lately, rarely and when I did I would hold them and only let her get one bite off. But that scared me to death, no more greenies at all for her. The news clip is my local station and the area they are talking about is 2 hours from me, I hadn't seen this on the news. They say to monitor the dog when they are chewing it but what are you going to do when the suddenly get a big piece off and down it goes in one gulp...or if they start to choke?? I too give Hallie only bully sticks for chews but that worries me too, once in a while she can get a decent sized piece off. She also likes to lay it flat, put a paw on each end and will "strip" pieces off lengthwise. Silly girl.  :idiot:

Thank you so much for sharing this with us.  I watch what I give to the babies carefully.  Especially with Beemer!  Because of his underbite, he does not chew as well as Mercedes.  I actually cried during the video.

Thanks again, Bev, Mercedes, and Beemer

Exactly Cheryl!!! That's just what it looks like. LOL. I'm glad to know Hallie isn't the only one. I suspect we get ours from the same lady in fact I think you might have been the one to suggest it!

So glad to know this for sure about the greenies, I kept hearing rumors which is why I was being so careful but after this video, they are getting tossed. Did you notice, one of the photos of the dogs that had died from eating a greenie was a handsome doxie? :(

Yes DD I did notice there was a doxie on the video that died..and the lady on ebay her personal name is Dena...fantastic lady..I've bought from her now for a couple years...I won't go with anyone else...

I heard that the greenies and pig ears no matter how much they can chew them up and swallow them normally that alot of it doesn't get digested and come out the other end like it should but instead "collects" in the intestines (especially pig ears and rawhide) and it builds up to a point that it becomes a blockage...that's when the problems begin...my vet told me this a few years ago when I got Abby as a puppy..she said it's starts to get "gummy" ...she told me to stay clear of pig ears..hooves too and rawhide and greenies...she has done so many operations for obstructions of the intestines on dogs and it was these chews that did it...sooooooo I fed the greenies once and their poop came out green...I guess they digested those ones!...lol

Green poop huh...then that must mean the geese at the pond eat greenies because that was the color of the poop Hallie rolled and totally immersed herself in on our way out to dinner the other day. LOL! (quick trip home for an emergency bath).

I knew that pig ears and cow hooves were bad (they can actually perferate the intestine if swallowed as sharp slivers too) but had only heard rumor of the greenies. Now that I know they can gum  up in there too, we're doing nothing but bully sticks. Yes the lady is super nice, I'm sure you were the one who pointed me to her.
