The last couple of years we have been introduced to fireflies, they are showing up in the yard like never before. I love to see the brief flicker of light in the yard, and Danni loves them. I let her out between 10 and 11 PM for one last b4 bedtime romp and her habits have changed. B4 she would run around the yard like a madwoman and bark up a storm, now she just goes out and runs to the back of the yard, does her business then takes 10 minutes to pounce on the fireflies as she is headed back to the house. It is fun to watch this little white/black dog jump like a sprite and pounce on fleeting lights. However, even the word cookie will not get her back to the house until her work is done.
Danni here, Da mama has to realize that there can be no light in the yard after it gets dark so that's why I pounce and pounce and pounce, but when da mama says no cookie unless I come in I run to her. Can't miss the bedtime cookie.
We've always had them here in Maryland. Having come to Maryland by way of New York and California, fireflies were truly fascinating for me when we first arrived. Nearly 37 years later, I still find them fascinating. Some years, they seem more numerous than others. Usually they are more active right at dusk. On some of our night mountain bike rides, though, you will see an entire meadow lighting up, or trees lit up like it was Christmas. Very neat stuff.
We don't have flies here in Caleefornya with blinky lights.

Yup, Sandy - we don't have fireflies, either - but I miss them. We had yellow ones in Missouri, but some places have green ones!
Very cute, Danni - Bastian also comes running when I remind him it's cookie time!
I remember visiting my grandparents in Washing DC as a child and loving the fireflies in their back yard. I don't know if I have ever seen any in Texas :dontknow:
They are definitely fascinating and interesting night creatures to watch, back in my grandparent's place, children catch them and put under their shirts.
