:eeew: Some of you may be keeping track, but here's today's update as of 3 p.m., local time:
Brekke - 1, rabbit -0 Brekke and Robinton - 1 each, sparrows - 0, and
Dachsies - 12, rats - 0 (and to be specific, Robinton has offically gotten the last two - one at about 7:40 last night, and the newest one today.)
Keep up the good work, my brave fellow Dachshunds. You do us PROUD!
Bonnie
oLlIe here ..... I have had 3 birds that MaMa knows about. She is ok with that. BUT I don't think I should ever get a rat ... MaMa would freak out.
Congratulations Hunters !
Congratulations from Patches & Buddy we do birds & squirrels momma does not keep track she knows of 2 squirrels.
Very impressive stats on the rat front. We reckon the only good rats are dead ones. Are you getting a salary for these services?
Hesitate to ask where you put them...
WOWZA - you are HUNTERS !!! I just gotz some geckos.... :doah:
But I shor am proud of you !
Your pal,
Toby River
The "rat-pack" thanks you! Andrea - since I never had rats before the large Vallarta Supermarket went in about 3 years ago, I do something that's not really politically correct - I discreetly toss them back over the fence into Vallarta's parking lot, and let the noisy street scrubber deal with them, at about midnight. The big trucks pull up exactly behind my kitchen - only about 24 feet away - to back up to the loading dock. The trucks used to come as early as 4:24 a.m. - which wasn't nice, since the street scrubber comes at midnight. Since I showed the new manager the city ordinance about delivery trucks not being allowed within 1,000 feet of residential homes between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., it has vastly improved. I wish rats would stay at least 1,000 feet away, too!
Schatzi seriously needs lessons from your gang. We are once again dealing with miles in our backyard. Schatzi will go and sniff around their little hills, scratch a bit and then roll all over it. I did find a dead one, once, but I have a sneaky suspicion the neighbors cat killed it. Saturday Schatzi tried to catch a toad. She quickly found out if you lick or bite a toad your mouth will foam and it doesn't taste good! These were common toads, so just an annoyance to her, she wouldn't drink out of her water bowl Fter that since it must have still tasted like the toad. I found her a new one.
Congratulations on catching all the rats! That is great!
I've never seen mine catch anything other than that rabbit Millie killed a couple years back and the possum Winston killed even more years back. They try really hard, but are generally not very good at it!
Rudy-angel was my most predatory, but never killed anything. Zeke talks a good show, but is hapless as a hunter. Zora's maternal instincts make her want to "mother" any other living being...but she absolutely "kills" stuffed animals.
The rat score shouldn't be surprising. The Hungarian word for dachshund (which I don't know) literally translates to "rat catcher"
update to the update:
I got back from gum surgery at about 3, and naturally, we went out in the back yard. Not even 8 seconds go by, and I hear a crunch - Robbie's got #13! I tell him to drop it, Bastian grabs it, I tell him to drop it, he does, and Brekke grabs it, and drops it when I tell her, Rowan is sniffing an apparent trail. I cover it with one of my containers, grab a shovel, and this one goes over the fence, too. (I sure am tired of 5 hours of ice packs - 3 minutes on, 3 minutes off, sigh!)
and, Brekke just got the fourth one in four days. Warm weather definitely is bringing out the vermin. I actually saw it first - ewww - and blocked it with my shovel from getting closer to the house, and she sneaked in and grabbed it. So, another one bites the dust.

The thought of rats really freaks me out. Can anything be done because the grocery store is creating a health hazzard?(http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons/emoticon-cartoon-019.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons.php)
Ewww, and Bastian caught one about 15 minutes ago! Hi, Ruth - I do not know, but if I have had 5 rats in my yard in 4 days, how many must the grocery store be getting/or what are they doing about them?
Have you talked to the Health Department about the Rat problem since the store opened there and you now have a problem but you do not know if the store has put out poison in the store ? Have read if a dog kills a Rat that has ingested poison the dog can be poisoned also ? Just be careful.
Good ideas, Ruth and papbouv - will get on that tomorrow.
I called the Dept. of Public Health this afternoon, and was referred to the "Mosquito Abatement..." people. I received a phone call asking for information about the store, what things I kept outside - dog food, birdseed, etc. and the actions of the rats if I saw any before their demise. The Abatement lady is coming out tomorrow to view things from my side of the fence. I did drive in behind the store at about 7:20 this evening, and was pleased with the neat appearance and cleanliness of the dumpster areas.
It will be interesting to see what develops here. Something has got to be causing the increase. If you don't have anything they want, and I am sure you do not, and you see them coming in from that direction, there is a chance the Public Health people will try to help take care of the problem. We lived in an area once that suddenly had an issue and they came out and tried to find where they were nesting. We lived in an older section of town with an alley behind the house which is where everyone kept their trash containers. It really helped once the county got involved.
Good luck hope the health department can be of a help since rats can carry the plague and diseases.Having dachshunds I'm sure you have no food out side anywhere or even inside know I have to keep my dog food locked up almost.papbouv

David, could this be the Hungarian word? patkányfogó
Rat breath, such a fine thing to have when giving Mom her good night kisses.
This sounds like a Monty Python sketch. Are you learning to play the flute...?
Good luck with the Health Dept folks.
The woman's name is Stephanie (and she looks SO much like my cousin Stephanie, that they could be twins!), arrived on time, walked around my front yard, came to the door, looked around the kitchen, and then we went out to the backyard. Most of my neighbors have trees to which the roof rats are attracted - fruit trees (I had my lime tree cut down months ago), palm trees, and cypresses - to name a few. Her sister has a dachshund, so she knew how to give belly rubs. (Ever notice how many people come here who have, or family members who have dachsies?)
She found lots of rat droppings in a regular trail along the horizontal boards in my fence. She explained ways of controlling the population, and I filled out some paperwork. Bromodioline is the compound used in the bait block, which is up on the top horizontal beam, in one place. She has a feeling that neighbors may be using something, or possibly the grocery store, since the last two I saw were slow enough for me to see first. She also says the rats may not even touch the bait for a month or two, since it'll be new to their environment. I feel fairly safer now, and hope this will help deal with the rodent population. Although I had not seen any before the grocer went in, there were neighbors the next street over, who had rats as far back as 12 years ago.
Bromadiolone Rat Poison

Bromadiolone can be used to poison rats in the home.
Bromadiolone is a type of rat poison that became popular due to its unique benefits several decades ago. It is an anticoagulant, a popular type of poison used for the control of both rat and mice populations. Though there are several types of anticoagulants available as rat poison, some populations developed a resistance to these. As a result, new anticoagulants were produced, among them bromadiolone. It has proven effective against these resistant rat populations, according to an article written in 1978 by Adrian P. Meehan, Chief Biologist, Rentokil Limited. Does this Spark an idea?

How It Works
Bromadiolone interferes with vitamin K activity, as explained in Meehan's article. This is what all classical indirect anticoagulants do, but the potency of bromadiolone is 10 times that of other anticoagulants. Eventually, bromadiolone causes death due to internal bleeding as the rodent's blood can no longer clot and capillaries become damaged, according to the University of California Integrated Pest Management Program. It is mixed with ingredients which attract rodents and encourage ingestion.
Effectiveness
Bromadiolone is highly effective against rats, according to Cornell University Cooperative Extension. An entire population of rats can be controlled with just one to two feedings, with a mortality rate of 90 percent after just one feeding. Bromadiolone is significantly more effective at controlling both rat and mice populations than similar anticoagulant rat poisons.

Time Frame
Studies reported in the article written by Meehan suggest that even small amounts of this substance can kill rodents efficiently. Time between ingestion and death appeared to be anywhere from one to 14 or more days. Information on the efficacy of this poison in currently available concentrations states that death will occur within 48 hours of consumption for some rodents, or up to five days later for others.
Purchasing Information
Bromadiolone is available in several forms under a number of brand names. It can be bought as concentrate, baits or pellets. Paraffin blocks and tracking powder are also available, according to Cornell University Cooperative Extension. All baits are designed to contain .005 percent of the active ingredient. This rodenticide, in any form, can be used effectively against house mice, roof rats and Norway rats. It can be found under the brand names Bromone, Maki and Supercaid.
Warning
Bromadiolone presents a risk to household pets such as dogs and cats who may eat it. Dogs are more sensitive to this rodenticide than cats, but consumption in either animal can be toxic. Similar dangers exist for small children; any ingestion of bromadiolone by a human should be handled immediately in an emergency medical center. If bromadiolone ingestion is suspected, call 911.
