about a month ago our 4 year old female sweetest baby on the earth... her back started going out on her. We didn't know what was wrong at the time. One day she would be fine and the next day she would be shaking and yelping in pain and she stopped the jumping up . We took her to the vet two weeks ago and got the bad news its probably disk or back . She got the steroid shot and tramural and preg. Fiinshed first dose much better off a couple days got worse,,,, 2nd dose same off since sat night got worse. Over the weekend she was almost her old self again she is also now crate trained and mostly stays in her crate only coming out for food and potty and she hasnt gone out side or been picked up in two weeks.I called the vet today he right away said she needed to go see the surgury specialist,,,,I explained this wasnt an option since we cant afford the surgury but we can do the chripractor and the acupuncture route. So he gives her more preg I was a tad irate knowing that this takes the poor babys weeks of quiet and recoop to get better just two days ago she was so much better when I got home from vet today she was back to yelping in pain again . We are crushed, Please pray shes part of the 78 percent that will recoop with just the meds Shes hasn't gone outside for a week or been picked up,,,, just two days ago she was asking to go up ,,,,,,,,,Im just really concerned for our baby here.
Yes, i will pray. I am sorry to hear that about your "baby". I have been down the back pain route myself. Pray that she heals.
Hello Stacy. We're glad you're here. What's your sweet pea's name? Here's a place you can go to for advice---- www.dodgerslist.com/ Since I, as a human, have had much success with a Chiropractor, I wouldn't hesitate to take my Bonnie to one as an alternative to surgery. I hope there's one in your area that you can consult with. Meanwhile, keep up the meds and the NO JUMPING! Best wishes to you.
Stacy, when you take her out to potty, try picking her up on a crate mat for awhile, instead of using your arms. It's easier to keep her back straight when you use something under her to pick her up. I just went through this with Murphy. If she's pretty active, even in her crate, you might need to ask for a tranquilizer to keep her very quiet. She'll keep re-injuring that spot if she's not quiet, and really kept to just a few steps outside to potty. What dosage did your vet give you on the predisone?
Dogerlist has great advice, you can pick her up just ask the vet the best way to do it and if she goes out to potty have her on a leash at all times so you can control how fast she goes. She should be on crate rest 6-8 weeks only going out to potty or some use exercise pens.Sounded like you have her in the crate for a week then let her out I maybe wrong on that just what i read sounded that way she really has to be in the crate all of 6-8 weeks.Good Luck Rays,& Hugs to you all.
thanks so much for well wishes leizal is 4 here she is all over facebook lol, http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1936096019521.53428.1755979893&type=3
the vet has her on tramural 5 mg 1/2 pill 2xs a day and it looks like she will be ok staying on pregnazone{50 mg 1/2 pill 2xs} without the surgurery, she has only been crate trained for one week she is a tad of a drama queen as well, I was really discouraged yesterday I really think the vet jumped the gun on surguery so soon into this after only 2 weeks,,,,she is being really good about keeping quiet we havent picked her up in at least a week but, last night she was much better after going back on the preg and this morning she ran to her puppy pad coming out of crate!

Welcome !!! Good information thus far.....just a warning.... when they are on the meds, they feel much better, and are inclined to do more than they should !!! Very VERY limited walking..... and if she is inclined to take off, keep her on leash. It is probably the most hard on the humans keeping them occupied while on crate rest. A normal recovery time....4-6 weeks, so settle in for the long haul ! Keeping good thoughts that surgery is not required !
thank you barb here in sc we have leash laws and cant go off leash
LOL - I am talking about in the house !!! She just needs to be restrained at all times !!! Take care - Smoochies to your baby !
Warmest healing prayers and rays heading your way from us in sunny Spain. What a pretty girl she is! Do tell us how her recovery goes and know we all appreciate what you are going through. Nice to meet you here and we hope you and your baby will stay for a long while.
You can also get some Rescue Remedy it is a flower derivative has been around since the 18 century made from flowers usually in a brown bottle usually found at some Pet stores since it is herbal may take awhile to kick in will help relax your Fur Kid. Yes I agree keep her on a leash inside the house so she will not take off. Please do go to Dogerslist.com they have allot of helpful information even some information on crate rest. Good Luck Rays & Hugs to you Fur Kid.
she is not tolerating the crate well at this time,im working with her every day, she just screams, we let her scream for about an hour, going to get some rescue remedy today and have appointment with accupunture vet for plan of action next week, she has been very good about sleeping most of the day and staying quiet thank goodness, its so heartbreaking seeing her little broken spirit just not understanding what she cant do any more, is it ok for them to be on the tramural and rescue remedy ?
Hi, Stacy! I'm Teresa and I am from SC, too. There are not many of us on here from this area, so it is exciting when I see someone new who even mentions South Carolina! I am from Greenville, in the upstate. Where do you live? I saw on your facebook page that we have the exact same birthday, year and all. Isn't it fun to be an April Fool baby?
I hope your baby gets better soon and the acupuncture will work or other non-surgery methods will work for you. Prayers being sent your way!
You can ask your vet but since one is a pain medication and the other is flowers and herbal should not be a conflict.
Stacey all of what the rest have said, he spirit is not broken just dented.....Amy howelled, plus they pick up on your stress. So try and stay calm (I know not easily done) Amy had back surgery and that was hard to take, and she also had a twing a few years later. We had a hard based crate and took her into whatever room we were in so she did not miss out.
Time is a great healer, and keeping them from reinjuring is a lifelong job.
I used to sit next to her crate and do puzzles etc and talk.
Our vet gave Amy patches for the pain for the first week or so.
Amy learnt how to get out of the soft crate hence the hard based one...................so watch zippers
Roberta
How is she now? Still sending more hugs and prayers for her full recovery...
shes still on bed and cage rest and her meds,,,,shes better not over it yet thanks so much for well wishes ,,,,,
Stacy - did you get something to help calm her down? The crate rest on the humans is a a true test of your sanity - thats for sure !!! But with doxies it is usually a given that at one time or the other they will have to spend time in one !!!! Sending rays - keep us posted -
More Rays and Hugs to you both, reminder do not give in to those soulful brown eyes be strong do all of the recommended jail time oh meant crate time you have to be the strong one for your fur kid. You might train her to lay down on a flat pillow have her stay then pick the pillow up just make sure she will not try to jump off. The pillow would give some support you could watch TV like that with you Fur Kid in your lap snuggle time just doing it carefully.Might run it by your vet first to make sure it is OK.
she is we hope improving slowly, she spends most of the day sleeping with some social , some quiet moments,,,,her dad was recently in the hospital and we've been out of sync with our routine, she still hasnt gone outside, we live in 2nd story condo 16 steps up, thankfully she is puppy pad trained but the preg she hes been, peeing buckets im starting to try to ween her off of it so she can go on anti inflamatory. We will be carrying her up and down the steps only time she cries now is when I try to pick her up shes def improvin with stilll a few bad days and some good days,,,,,,,she has put on some weight too with the preg and no exercize she was 13 poundswhen this all started very trim,,,,, but her little spirit is still there but very stubborn and barking all the time lol. thanks for well wishes and doxie rays,,,,,,,,,, I am in touch with the vet on a reg basis and have several suggestions of at least 3 vets in this area, for next steps when she is able to go out for chriopractic, acupunture scares me,,,,,,,
ps she just burrowed for the first time that i have seen in 6 weeks woot!
I would do acupuncture first, and I wouldn't attempt chiropractic treatments until her back is strong again. The acupuncture won't irritate her spinal cord, where chiro could. I'm glad to hear she's doing better though-Couple more weeks and she's going to be feeling much better.
thank you for the acu advice and encouragement,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :hello2:
Current update,,, last week we took leizal to another vet for 2nd opinion, his take was if shes still walking why have surgery,,, so he wanted her to stay over night and he gave her the 4 shots{steroid} and he said she was fat , she needs to loose weight 4 pounds ,,,,, her back legs are week and wobbly but he says she should be fine as long as we keep her back straight and keep her quiet for another 3 weeks.so poor thing is miserable stairing at her empty food bowl most of the day occassionaly barking at it of course, fed 2xs a day{total of 2/3rds cup food, all day} no treats except for baby carrots,,,,, we hear adding string beans to each meal makes them feel fuller will be adding that to her meals so we are still in the hoping her back legs regain full use stage ,,, its been up and down,,,,before her back went out she was a lean 13 pounds no exercize and pregnazone she now weighs 17.
This will help in the loosing weight department if you can find it look for Wellness Small Dog Weight control food I buy it for Patches it is a little expensive but it is a good food also has fiber to help make the dog feel full. Yes Do give her the green beans that will also help one reason she is eying the food is because Predisone makes them Hungry as a bear they also drink allot more water when on the Predisone.Might go to Dogerslist.com they may have more ideas on loosing weight. Also ask you vet if swimming would help your girl in the future helps with the being overweight the water would hold her up might use a life jacket they make them for dogs. Good Luck more Rays & Hugs from Patches,Buddy and papbouv.
thank u for advice i tell u her old self is coming back slowly and thats not good ! lol {raiding the trash in middle of night}
I feed Schatzi the Wellness Small Dog Weight Control and was surprised at how well it works. I really thought she would be starving. Schatzi free feeds, so when I put the recommended amount in her bowl the first day, I was curious to see how long it would last. She actually had a little bit left the next day, and she is a pretty good eater. She has gained a little weight lately, but that has been due to more treats than usual I think and not as much exercise. That is about to change! I hope you get some good news and a great report soon.
Very dangerous for them to get in the trash but I know what you mean when we go anywhere I put all of the trash containers in the bathtub that way I know Patches will not get in them.Patches taught Buddy my 90# Doberman to get in the trash so I now have to make sure the lid is on the kitchen trash container, put the rest in the bathtub for some reason he does not bother them in there. Doberman's have a nick name of Dobergoats allot have died from eating stuff they should not its called Pica of course any breed can eat stuff they should not.Buddy stayed in a crate when we were not home until he was 2 years and 4 months old he was done with puppy hood and being a teenager. Now I can leave them loose if I do the trash in bathtub bit they are both 6 years old now if Buddy gets too playful with Patches she goes under the couch.
well its been about 3 weeks since new vet and shes had her 4 shots,,,,,PROGRESS! Shes loosing weight and almost has full use of her back legs,,,one of them is still turning out word and "dragy" its hard to describe,,,,,,,,,shes wanting to play more again,,, will start going for walks next week, were feeding her evole dog food which is all natural 2/3rd cup split into 3 feedings and were starting to see her ip bones again! So encouraged that shes going to be oklong haul though! :hello2: :apls:
Great news !!! You might ask about hydrotherapy (exercise in water) to help strengthen her back legs !
