Post by: Roberta on February 09, 2012, 11:15:48 PM
snake. 0
Last Sat I had come up the hill from Jane's popped Ollie over the fence to the garden area, he started to run up to Nick . Amy was going girlies and about to sharge down the hill to me................then I saw it a Red Bellied Black Snake sunning himself/herself. I grabbed Amy up roughly and dragged ollie and shouted to Nick to open the family room door and go close the laundry.  He done that and then I told him, we decided to use the 4 wheel drive to go over it, but it got away to who knows where by the time we got the keys.  It is illegal to kill snakes here, but if its the kids or us the  shovel comes first.
So this afternoon I came up from the washing line and there it was, I tried the car but I could not get round fast enough, it tried to get through the cage wire fence and got stuck...........good bye snake I actually broe the shovel handle in the end.............took about an hour to calm down. Needless to say the kids were locked up inside..

My goodness are you brave.  I would have died on the spot.  I am soooooo relieved you are all safe and sound.  Here they always say snakes travel in two's please tell me you are absolutely sure there are no more lurking.  Horrible things, I have a mortal phobia of snakes and could never go to Australia, poor vulnerable dachsies so close to the ground.  Yuck, yuck, yuck.

I hate the things to, but this the first in 25 years of coming up and 3 years of living here, so don't let that put you off coming.
I did google " are they loners"" mate for life" etc and it seems they only come to gether a mating time in the spring, but I will still will be watching. The blacks are the quiet ones they will try and go rather than fight, unlike browns or tigers.
