Title: Coyotes

Think your pet is safe from coyotes?

Think your pet is safe from coyotes? It's best to keep pets indoors, or at least keep an eye on them when they go outside. We knew this. We also knew that, in addition to cars and diseases and poisonous plants, our cats and dogs might have to contend with wildlife like coyotes.

What we didn't know is that coyotes roam the suburbs of Columbus, OH -- and could snatch felines and small canines. Other disturbing, but possibly useful, information gleaned from the 10TV report:

"Every city" has a coyote issue, according to Dr. Stan Gehrt of OSU's School of Environment and Natural Resources. Gehrt has studied coyotes for years, and also noted that the OSU campus has coyotes in residence as well as "passing through."
This time of year -- January through the end of February -- is peak mating season for the coyote, and the resulting hormonal increases "could lead to attacks on pets."
The good news is, you can protect your pet just by...existing; a healthy coyote isn't interested in people, and will back down from a human. (In the event that you see a coyote get hostile with a human or any other animal, call your local animal-control authority or wildlife division immediately.)
It's always a good idea to keep cats indoors. When you go out with your dog, keep her on a leash, or at least within sight.

Other sources recommend fencing in your yard (six feet high is a good minimum); keeping large dogs indoors as well, since coyotes may see them as a threat, and attack; installing motion-sensor lights at the edges of your property; and locking down or disposing of possible food sources -- not just your garbage, but birdfeeders and ripe fruit from trees in your yard as well.

And if all else fails, you can hire the cat who backed down a gigantic alligator.

...Joking aside, be alert to the wildlife in your area. Even urban settings can play home to some decidedly wild animals (there's a raccoon the size of a minivan in my Brooklyn neighborhood), and you don't want your poodle to suffer the same fate as Jessica Simpson's poor hound Daisy.

So, depending on your location, they WILL take small dogs of your leash. And the "keep them with in sight" doesn't work. Coyotes tease and play, dog to dog, and lure the dog out of your area. And they may not like people- but they can get VERY use to them, standing just feet away from you, and...

We have them here.   I onnce saw one at my old condo in broad daylight.  It looked like a real mangy dog.    None of my guys have had any encounters with them, thank goodness

I feel bad when I see the "Missing" signs for cats (and the occasional small dog) that are near the stream valley park that adjoins our neighborhood.    I know what probably happened to them  :sad7:

We've got a coyote den back behind our house somewhere.  We hear them howling on occasion, but still only see them rarely.

When my mother-in-law lived in Iowa she had 88 acres of land she lived there alone for about 10-15 years after her husband died with her cat & small dog. The Coyotes were around one spring there was a huge pack of coyotes couple of dogs in with them my MIL called some of her neighbor s she knew they had calf's/foals  they did not believe her.One day some of the good ole boys saw them then they believed her.She called the state wildlife office they sent out trappers they trapped and killed about 50. One time her little dog was picked up my MIL made all kinds of noise the Coyote dropped her dog it ran straight into her arms. My neighbor has seen them on our street surprised the neighbor right next door to her has 3 Rat terriors a very old Sheltie and a white Duck ???  I'm surprised the coyotes have not jumped the 5" cyclone fence and got the duck or the terriors whom bark non stop 24/7 never are told to shut-up.I feel sorry for the dogs they are outside all of the time in winter but may have a dog house in the backyard.

We certainly have coyotes in our area.A few years back Simon chased one out of the yard.In hindsight if the coyote had seen Simon first the outcome could have been very different.

We have coyotes all through nothern IL, including areas of Chicago .  Here in Oswego, my parents often have them run through their property which backs up to the Fox River.  They also regularly see a small herd of deer and a family of red foxes.

We live in an area that is fairly residential. There are a couple of small open fields around, but not too many. One of the  small ones is behind my house. Anyway, a neighbor around the corner posted a couple of weeks ago that her son has now killed three coyotes and two fox from his bedroom window. Their house has an open area behind it (this is the area that eventually ends up behind my house, but it's probably a couple of acres) and they set up a sensor that will trigger an alarm in their son's room when something goes in front it. The alarm sounds, he gets up, opens the window and kills the coyote. It has amazed me there have been that many this close to our house. Our neighbor has two cats that are out all the time (these cats are starting to kill the birds I am feeding so they are on my bad list right now). I let her know earlier this week that we have coyotes around and she may want to have them inside, especially at night.

So alarming, especially in this season. My Aunt in Alaska is in full alert.
