Title: Jake turned 17 this October!
Post by: Jake95 on December 19, 2011, 11:34:33 AM
Don't know how many of you remember Jake and I (Eleanor)  The old man is still going strong. He shows his age but no major health issues. I met a dealer selling BARF (bones &raw food) at a dog show in Savanahh, Georgia. I have always fed Jake Solid Gold, have had very few Vet visits but he does have a lot of arthirtis now. Anyway I started feeding him these all organic beef sticks about 2 weeks ago. He is walking better and sleeping better also. His latest antic is after I have taken care of all his physical needs at night, food, potty, water etc. and I think it is time to go to sleep, he is still pacing in his crate, like he needs something. So the other night I picked him up and held him wrapped in his blankie and rocked him until he got sleepy. Once he gets sleepy I can put him in the crate all wrapped up and he sleeps most of the night. He just needs the security and comfort to get sleepy. Jake does not bark anymore or talk (I miss that so much) I think he has lost most of his hearing. He seems to still have his sight to some degree. I have to pick him up off the floor a lot but he still walks and eats like a horse. He is still very aware of his potty needs and will get very agitated if he needs to go and is in his crate. Do we have any other senior weiners still on the board?  Eleanor

Hi Eleanor,

I remember you and Jake!   That's awesome that he is still with us and looking good for a very senior weiner.   My original pair Rudy & Max both went to the Bridge in 2005 and 2006 at age 13 and 17 years 7 months, respectively.     I'm now owned by Zeke and Zora, who were originally owned by Yamisi.  We adopted them when Yamisi had to give them up because her child developed asthma.  They are 9 and 10 now.

Hi Eleanor.  Of course I remember you and Jake!  What a stately gentleman Jake is.  We only have Bonnie now.  We brought her home when she was 10.  She is now 13.  We lost the little Madderoo over a year ago now.  I'm becoming more involved with a local rescue here called Foxy Doxy Dachshund rescue.  We are an all dog rescue but mainly dachshunds.  foxydoxydachshundrescue.com

Eleanor - so glad to see you !!!  Happy Barkday to Jake !  My Brandy will be 16 in March, and she has lost hearing, most of her sight - I think she may be able to see shadows and she doesn't talk to me anymore either.....  She has been on Anipryl for almost 6 weeks for cognitive issues, and I think it is helpin a bit.  I do find that she is calmer when I am home, and once she paces until she is exhausted, will cuddle up close to me and snooze.  She eats well, and still goes out the doggie door if needed to go potty...so I consider us still going strong !!!

Don't be a stranger !

Of course we remember you! Jake looks great for such an elderly gentleman and in very good condition.  Here´s hoping he is around for a long time yet and still hungry and active too.  Thanks for sharing the piccie with us too.

Eleanor I just had to respond when I saw the comment  " I miss that so much"

My Twinkie angel is long gone now!!  hard to believe next November it will be 10 YEARS since she left.  And I also said  "I miss that so much!!"               She was mostly deaf at the end as well as not able to see much. I think those with younger healthy dogs might find it hard to believe missing the barking but its true, when they stop it leaves a big hole!!

Will say though Twinkie and I would talk right to the end. I have no idea how it actually worked but she would make a sound and I would make one back and then she would make one back.  sometimes those lasted quite a few minutes. Some thought maybe she felt a vibration or something.  Also admit I have ABSOLUTELY what either of us said except I think we were communicating our love for each other.

So to those of you will loud boisterous dogs.....when they get you really really frustrated stop, think and realize in the future you will reallly miss those moments hard as that might be to believe in the moment.
Trying to add picture of her here.  I know its huge picture but it too this long to post eve this one.

Of course we remember you and Jake! All of her life, Hallie has used the bag you sent us when I first got her, when we go somewhere overnight. We still do. It's wonderful to see Jake (he looks great!) and to hear how well he is doing at 17. You have sure been lucky with his health. Hallie is now 11 and went blind overnight in April. :( But she's doing quite well with it, better than I am for sure! Thanks for posting give Jake a hug for us.
