Title: Crystals in Urine ??????
Post by: papbouv on December 14, 2011, 10:45:26 PM
Hi took Patches & Buddy to the vets for toe nail chops talked to them about Patches she has been licking herself last week she was in her daddy's recliner when she got down had a wet spot she had not been licking while in the chair. I wondered if she had a UTI so  I mixed water, cranberry juice then put low sodium beef broth canned on top she drank it down. I fixed it about three different times for her because  I do not think they drink that much water. While they had her in the back they said they got her to pee checked her for a UTI said it would take about 15 minutes. The vet came out a bout 20 minutes later said she had a infection not too bad also said she had crystals in her urine not many but some.Put her on antibiotics for 14 days then suppose to go back and re-test her urine said may have to change her food half of the vet office is full of Science Diet garbage dog food. I swear vets get a kick back selling that junk it is right up there with Beneful dog food corn 1st ingredient usually. Will see what happens not sure if i trust these vets 100% both my sisters,my mother,MIL, & a friend all use this same vet all have had the Science Diet dog foods pushed onto them seems a little too odd to me. May get a second opinion before doing too much. Thought I would ask here about UTI 's and crystals in the urine on Dachshunds plus I will Google it too. Thanks for any input ahead of time.Papbouv

I haven't been through that one with mine, but I agree with you on the crappy food. I wish they would get some really good food in for these problems! Sounds like you caught it real early you are a great mom. How is her lump looking?

Ask Crystals of What................as it makes a diffrence what they are. They should then run a Ca, PO4 and uric acid on the urine to see if they are high or a creatinine and urea to see if the kidneys are working.
You can always buy dip sticks that they use in humans, you do have to make sure they have specific gravity, protein/albumin and Glucose.

Thanks DeeDee & Roberta is the same sticks we use to dip for diabetics I did it years & years ago when i worked as a Nurses Aide  then they went to the meters did not use the sticks much anymore.
Will check into it hope when they test in two weeks the crystals will be gone I have spent close to a thousand dollars so far using my care credit card at the vets already told them can't go much higher. one would think a follow up pee test would not cost much since it is a follow up on the same case think i will mention that not that it will do me any good. Thanks for the information.Papbouv

Rudy-angel had a similar problem years ago with crystals in his urine.   He would mark territory even when he was out of urine and it would mix with blood, caused by the crystals inflaming his urethra.  (This is all IIRC, it's been 12 to 13 years since this occured).   Someone on WW suggested mixing in white vinegar with his water.  We mixed some white vinegar into his water bowl and never had the problem again.

Try the fosters&smith web site. there is a link to their pet education stuff and i have found good info there.

When I got twinkie she had about 5-6 bladder infections in 6 months. As a condition of getting her I had to get her spade, which I did asap.  Used that stupid science diet food for several years as i was told it was only way to avoid bladder infections.  One question here when dog goes out are the going to a grassy area and is there any problems with damp or wet ground.  My Twinkie was very low to the ground.  The trailer park was bult over underground springs and my yard often was soggy.  When I moved to Eau claire, I got suspicious and went back to nutro. No more problems. Bottom line is twinkie was built very low to the ground.  When she squatted she was  right down in the grass.  I think that caused many of the bladder infections. Mention that in case the ground is damp a lot. if so if you can find a way around that it would help, Merion  had a gravel dog run for hers.  I think that helped some too.

Will also say that canned food was horrid. it looked like library paste blended with chicken broth.... icky gelatinous mess.  I would break it up as much as I could and she would just swallow chunks. Sometimes got sick and it was clear she just swallowed the lumps.  Will also say her coat was horrid and dry. I think there are some other brands of food that might be better.
