Missy, my 6 year old smooth brown mini, sometimes will, all of a sudden start sounding like she is hyperventilating (or breathing heavy) I dropped a small piece of spicy chicken chunks on the floor and yes she got it. After she ate it she did the "hyperventilating" thing for about 15 seconds and then she was fine, but she seems to be doing this more and more. She usually only has a couple of quick breaths, and then she is normal, but sometimes she does it for about 10 seconds. I have had dogs do this in the past and was wondering if anyone has experienced this with their doxies. Haven't taken her to the vet yet. Thanks in advance.
I think most dogs do it at one time or another Patches has done it even big ole Buddy has done it do not thing it is too much to be concerned about might ask the vet next time you go in. Also could be allergies seems like man and beast are having more problems with allergies now days than in the past.
It sounds like she is having what is called a "reverse sneeze". It's scary sounding, but not a major health risk. Try covering Missy's nostrils to force her to breathe through her mouth. That usually ends the episode.
I agree with David. Sounds like a reverse sneeze. My dear departed Dolly did this with some frequency. I found that rubbing her throat with my hand, forcing her to swallow would help greatly.
Speaking of spicy food, when I had my first Dachsie, Dixie, I was frying up some HOT Italian sausage. Well, one popped right out of the pan and the little garbage disposal was right there to catch it almost in mid-descend. Afterwards, it was so funny. (Sorry Dix, but it was). Her eyes got big and her tongue really started working overtime trying to cool her mouth down. No harm done in the end but, boy howdy, that'll teach her to snatch and snarf. Well, she never did learn that lesson too well. These little wieners are CHOW hounds.
The "reverse sneezes" is what it sounds like. Did the your doxies have this a lot or did it pass? What actually causes them? I remember my doxies in the past doing it some, but it was as frequent as Missy. Thanks so much for the replies.
I agree with the others about the reverse sneeze.... I normally blow into my kids nostrils, to force them to swallow and breathe through their mouth.
My Rudy is the one that does it the most....generally when he gets really excited....
It IS scary the first few times !
Yup, reverse sneezing it is! Pretty much all of mine doing it, at least sometimes. My vet told me it's similar to the hiccups in people, so nothing at all to worry about.
