Title: Mocha - niece to Brekke

Mocha - niece to Brekke

(Mocha is the puppy I picked up in Texas and brought her back to California for my friend, Brenda.)

As Brenda and her sister, Karen, were walking in to the vets' office yesterday at 1:15 for Bella's (Cavalier King Charles spaniel) and Mocha's (chocolate tan longhair) rabies shots, they were attacked by a man's black-and white large dog and his two black labs. Bella was bitten on the back left haunch and her lower tush. Mocha was bitten in the chest, side, and I don't know where all. They had been taken back for surgery around 2, when Brenda called me and then had Karen take the phone to tell me what happened. I went to the vet's,  found out what had happened, and discovered that he had immediately said he would be responsible for the bills.  Then, about an hour later, I took Brenda to the urgent care, because she'd been bitten on the right index finger and was bleeding profusely. She was there from 4 to a bit after 6. We went to the pharmacy and then back to the vet's. Bella was out of surgery with 4 stitches, but Mocha was still being treated. Finally, around 7:30, we got to go back to see them, and Bella just needed her rabies shot and could go home. Mocha had been shaved all around her chest, since she'd had several ribs broken, a lung punctured, and more internal injuries as the vet explored. She was very sedated, and Dr. Baugh said he wanted her that way for a couple of days. We were watching "The King's Speech" and it was about 11:20 when the phone rang. The night vet told Brenda that Mocha had passed. She'd had trouble breathing around 9, but they straightened that out, and at 10 she was breathing through her mouth, so they worked on her more, but Dr. Hu thought she'd probably had more trauma than her little body could handle. We decided that it had not been a good day.

Oh God!  I am seriously bawling my eyes out.  This is absolutely my WORST fear!!! I haven't walked Bonnie in WEEKS (Make Mark do it) because I'm terrified of the big dogs that run loose here.  My best prayers and rays to Brenda.  She must be crushed!  In tears, I say that my heart breaks right along with hers.  How tragic.

Tell her I am sending prayers and rays her way also!!   Sounds like one guy had no control over 3 dogs and had no business having all 3 there if he could not control them!!   Hopefully the dogs were all up to date on shots including rabies!!

I am beginning to think we all need to take some major super soaker water guns with us!! or a large jug of ice water!!

I am so sorry to read this.  You never expect to have your dog attacked and killed at a vet's office, even if outside the door. Somehow those things just don't seem go together in a person's mind, at least they didn't before I read this. Prayers will be going up for Brenda and Karen and for Bella, too.

OMG Julia! I just couldn't believe what I was reading! Not sweet Mocha! I am SO sorry, Brenda has to be crushed! What a horrific thing to have happen especially at a vets office. How in the world did 3 dogs go out of the control of their owners and attack? So the owner offered to pay the vet bills...well that doesn't begin to cover the loss of a child. There is no excuse for what happened. I can't bear to think of what poor Mocha and Brenda went through. This is the saddest story. Please tell Brenda she is in our thoughts and prayers and how very sorry we are!

OMG!!!! That is just awful! Poor Mocha and poor Brenda. She must be inconsolable. I remember little Mocha when you came to get her. She was Gretchen's first (and only) puppy that she got 'mother.' Well, kinda 'mother.' Tell Brenda I'll be thinking and praying for her. As DD said, the least the guy could do is pay the bills. Is nothing going to be done to his dogs? It won't bring Mocha back but it will at least not happen to another dog. I will never let my dogs walk into the vets office again. They will always be carried in! I just can't imagine what Brenda is going through right now. At least she has you, Julia. A good friend is worth more than anything in the world!

i see dumb people take their dogs to the vet no leash on the dog OH my dog is friendly you cannot trust any dog at the vets due to the smells, all the different dogs ,cats, other animals. All small dogs and cats should be carried or for maximum safety put in a small crate each time they are taken in or out. Hugs to Brenda again .

She is doing pretty well, Delia.  She accepted the fact that it was an accident, even though the man dragged his two other dogs into the fight, trying to grab the leash that had been pulled out of his hand.  We know from the vet techs that Dr. Baugh did all he could to save Mocha, so that was a blessing.  Lassie, the sheltie, looks for Mocha in the garage, which seems to be the last place to hold Mocha's scent, and Bella, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, seems to think that Mocha may still be at the vets', where Bella last saw her, after they both had surgeries from the incident.

Still so very sad please tell her sending Hugs to her. Think I would tell that jerk s that Mocha was a show dog worth a lot of monies yes I'm evil but I have a 88# Doberman who was at the vet just on Wed he is a little re-active since a pit Bull jumped the fence and attacked him. There was a dog at the vets gave my Dobe the stink eye & Buddy my Dobe barked at the dog. I had to walk my Dobe past the dog I wrapped my 6 ft leather lead around my Dobe mouth and had him up close when we walked by no chance of a fight.Too bad the idiot with the 3 dogs did not take them out one at a time so that accident would not have happened. Some people should not own dogs he is one of them.
