Title: Parker had 8 teeth pulled
Post by: peterparker on March 15, 2011, 04:15:34 PM
Parker had his first cleaning on Monday. He's three. His breath was disgusting, and his teeth were visably in bad condition. I certainly didn't expect a dog at such a young age to require extractions but it seems after they were cleaned, nerves were exposed and 4 back teeth, and 4 front teeth had to go.  Vet said some of the teeth pretty much fell out without much effort (front teeth). Some had to be drilled in half, then removed (back teeth). Parker is currently medicated for pain, and also on some antibiotics. He seems very sad, and needy. We are treating that with lots of hugs, and cuddles. His breath is sweet. He's sleeping alot right now. My husband is off work these week, so he's getting lots of lap time. I know he would prefer me to be home, but one must work to pay the vet bill lol.
Anyways, I was under the impression that Parker was from good breeding stock, so I was a little surprised that his teeth were in such bad shape. He eats dry dog food, the best quality, and enjoys a good chew on a dental bone.  We never brushed his teeth. I thought that would be enough.
Am I wrong in thinking his breeding wasn't so good?   Kelly

Dis is Parker: I gots hardly any teef left. It hurts sort of. I am going to try an be a berry good boy and not complain too much. I'm gettin lots of cuddle time, and tasty soft food. Mamma is puttin da dwugs in yummy cheese. mmmmmm I am berry worried about da puppers in Japan, being scarred. I'm berry lucky dat Momma and Daddy lub me and take care of me but what about da pupper in Japan. Send rays to dem. And da hoomans too.

The smaller the dog the more prone to bad teeth he or she is. That's because small dogs have very thin-skinned mouths, so their teeth tend to dry out more, which causes tartar and plaque to build up.

The best thing to do is either brush the teeth or use Petzlife gel or spray. I'm getting Guinness' teeth cleaned and if there are any left, I'll be using the gel and rubbing it on his teeth at night. As much as he fights me, if I put a little gel on my finger, I should be able to rub it on his teeth. The Z's (David and Margie's) get brushed regularly, but they are used to the abuse. (David is used to it, I mean!)

When Eddie went for his first cleaning he didn't lose any teeth, but a few months later they looked like they has never been cleaned.  I mentioned that to the vet and he said that some dogs have more bacteria in their mouths and they get bad awfully fast.

To anyone that has a small dog breeding does not have much to do with bad teeth or good teeth you bite the bullet get them cleaned by a vet then brush them everyday. With dogtooth paste  & use Petzlife or even Leba lll it is suppose to be good but when I used the Leba lll I did not see a very good improvement so went back to the Petz life. I also put the additive you put in there water several different brands. Just feeding dry food and giving dental bones is not enough, their are some that feed raw bone chicken necks turkey necks to clean teeth on their dogs. Must be a raw bone cooked bones splinter but dogs can break a tooth but some people swear by raw bones. I'm too chicken to feed raw bones + have a very big dog and a little dog would not want any fights over bones. I'm sure Patches would loose another thing to think about if you have multiple dog house holds not unless you crate during bone time or have super control after all they are dogs.

Awwww rays for Parker..... I have heard that doxies are prone to not so good teeth, and I would think breeding factors in as well.  A lot depends on how much they gnaw on stuff that gets the tarter off.  As mentioned, there are several different things to use...... Brushing is good - but man, oh man - I have a hard time brushing any of mine !!!

awwwwwww, poor Peter Parker.  (And poor mom, I'm sure this cost big $$$$$.)
Whenever my two got dentals or teef pulled, I would soak their regular kibble until it was mush and add a little baby food to encourage them to eat. (Not that this was ever a problem for Loki.)

I was reminded, by the vet, though, not to give milk/yogurt if they are on anti-biotics as it reduces the effectiveness of the drug.

Poor little dude.  No wonder he's sulky.  Give him a hug from us.   :comfort:

Yikes, I've been wrapping his antibiotic in cheese. I think we will change to ham. Thanks for the tip.

Porky gets his teeth brushed daily and we use the gel and additive for his water.  He STILL has nasty breath.  Our vet said part of his problem with keeping his teeth clean was due to his allergies.  He has very bad post-nasal drip so his breath will always smell icky.  The brushing was easy to get Porky used to. He still doesn't like it, but he will tolerate it.  It has saved him from losing his teeth.   I hope Parker feels better quickly!!!!

Actually only certain antibiotics have problems with dairy!

Other kinds do not have problems with it and then using yogurt can really help to get his system back in balance!!  I always ask the vet if they give an antibiotic if I need to avoid dairy.

My twinkie had problems with bladder infections when we lived in the trailer park. We finally started using the pink liquid one!  I swear she could peel brauschweiger and peanut butter off pills and then spit them out!
The pink stuff i could even put in yogurt and she never refused to take that at all!

Kelly, some of the best breeding lines in dachshunds for things like back health and patella health also have bad teeth.  It really doesn't have anything to do with bad breeding-some lines have a body pH that seems to make their teeth not break down the crud that naturally occurs in a dogs mouth.  The father of my puppies is like that, but Millie's teeth are pearly white, so I'm hoping the girls got their mama's pH, but their daddy's good looks.   I see that in my pet dachshunds too.  Winston has beautiful white teeth, always.  Murphy and Reilly have cruddier teeth and need something to chew on regularly that scrapes their teeth.  I've found the beef patellas work wonders for that-once a month does the trick.

When I first got Rudy-angel nearly some 18 years ago (!!) at his first vet visit, the vet told me "If you want your dog to life a long, healthy life, the number 1 thing you can do is take care of their teeth.".   I was far more religious with Rudy & Max than I am with the Zs.   Rudy managed to make it 10 years before he needed his first cleaning.    A lot of that does have to do with the pH of the saliva.  When I got Max, I took care of his teeth identical to Rudy, but he needed cleanings more often and had extractions as he got older.   Max had bad teeth design:  he had "grooves" that would collect food.  I ended up having to floss his teeth, too.

The Zs have far better teeth from a breeding standpoint.   However, even as half-siblings, the amount of crud that accumulates on their teeth is different.   Zora has less crud, and it is easier to scale off, however her gums are more susceptible to gingivitis.   Zeke gets a lot more crud, but has stronger gums.   I still clean and scale their teeth on a weekly basis and give them annual cleanings from the vet.  As they get older, I'm a bit more wary of putting them under anesthesia, so I will likely "step up" the number of brushings they get.
