Title: Ms Molly Has An Anxiety Problem!
Post by: Kelly on February 17, 2011, 09:33:45 AM
As most of you know we added another "Dachshie" to the Graham Cracker Bunch here in Illinois! Well ever since we got her a week before Christmas she's attached herself to my Mom and when my mom is out of the room she'll stand near the gate in the kitchen crying like a little baby until my Mom comes back to the kitchen. She's ok if she can be with my Mom!

( :walk2: = wrong way to walk your pupper!)

You might want to research Cesar Millan about calming her anxiety by asserting yourself in the pack order. He often does a kind of zen-like deep breath, while holding a leash to exude calm authority. Try putting a leash on Molly Girl, getting her to relax, not pulling on the leash, then after a moment she should just lay down and relax. She knows you're in charge, so she chills out. Then you can calmly show her affection by petting her.

See if it helps. As Cesar says, "¡Buena suerte - good luck!"

I seem to remember reading in a book once that dogs get anxious when you leave them not because they are afraid of being alone, but because they are afraid for you if they see themselves as being leader of the pack. The reason they get anxious is that they see themself as your protector. So Molly might feel protective of your mum, especially if mum gives Molly lots of privileges, and be anxious when she is out of sight. From this book (I think it was the dog whisperer) it suggests that just a few simple things can reassert your mum as being pack leader over Molly. Firstly, when going across a threshold or a doorway, mum must go first and not allow Molly to lead the way. If mum feeds Molly then she should pretend to eat some of Molly's food before giving it to her (that one used to make me laugh doing it). When mum comes back after being away she shouldn't make a fuss of Molly right away, the pack leader doesn't respond to other dogs attention, the pack leader chooses when to give attention. Those are the three things I remember. Now it might sound silly but when I was having problems with getting Tris and Holly to sleep peacefully in another room I had some real problems with them settling and not howling and going out into the garden to bark at my bedroom window (lol). I started to do these three things and I swear within a few days their behaviour had changed completely and they were so much more relaxed.  Like everything else with training it depends on consistency and persisting with the technique.  Oh and I remember that this book said never to make a fuss when you are leaving your dog as it can raise anxiety, when I go out I simply tell my two 'be good doggers' then leave. (erm they don't always remember to be good doggers but they don't seem anxious :-)

I hope you can resolve Molly's anxiety, she sounds like a wonderful little girl and she has landed very lucky with her new home xxxxxxxx
