Zeke's condition is not getting any better. We're taking him in for X-rays on Monday. At times he acts like himself and at times he yelps in pain. The results of the X-rays will determine what our next step is. They may try to treat him with a steroid, or we may have to go with surgery. Other than that, we're just trying to keep him quiet and warm right now (it was 10 degrees this morning).
Healing rays going south to our pal Zeke. He has a lot on his side, youth, health and loving hu-parents!!! Keep us updated, please, David.
Hilde and I are sending some healing rays for Zeke. Hope that you can get his problem resovled soon. Do keep us posted.
Darcel & Hilde
I hate to hear this David, it sounds like a disc after all. It breaks your heart when these little guys are in pain, we're sending prayers and rays that he won't need surgery and can heal up on his home from this episode. Keep him crated and as still as you can except for potty breaks and be sure not to let him run then, then right back into the crate, until he can see the Dr, that can make all the difference in getting well vs going downhill more fast.
MAJOR Rays coming from Virginia.....I know what you are going through, and nothing makes it easier. Hopefully surgery will be a last resort, please tell Zeke he has more angels than he knows looking out for him, and keep ups posted. Hugs all around, hang in there.
Oh,David I'm so sorry to hear this. I've gone through the back thing soooo many times (and one neck disc too). We had some luck wih prednisolone (not regular prednisone) and complete rest but also had to go through surgery three times with three of our Doxies. It's a lot to go through - not to mention the expense - but in two cases (Schnitzel and Kleine) they are still going! Our very best wishes are with you.
Rays & Hugs to Zeke get better soon.Papbouv & Fur Kids.
Rays and Prayers for ya Zeke.
rays and prayers wee man.
Roberta and da gang
The ZZ's are sending a ton of HHHHHHHH's & PPPPPPPPP's for Zeke.
Hope he is feeling better soon.
Merion & the ZZ's
I bet the old Z's Zeke and Zelda and my Twinkie are all up in rainbow bridge sending healing rays down to him!! Probably all of our angels are!! Too many of them had those problems on earth and I bet they are sending as many rays as they can!!!
Merion's Zeke must be really watching over him because he has his name!!
Loads of rays coming to Zeke! I hope surgery is not necessary.
Mega rays headed Zeke's way! We have fingers and paws crossed hoping for no surgery!
We are so sorry to hear this and will be sending lots of warm Spanish rays and prayers your way for today. Do let us know how the consultation goes.
If you can get some dried wheat and lavender to mix in a long sock or pillow case and heat for two minutes in the microwave it soothes the pain and inflammation gently and is very calming and comforting -useful to use along with the appropriate meds.
Zeke's X-rays were, for the most part, negative. There were no discs out of place or any narrowing of the spinal cord, or any other obvious signs of problems. There was a little bit of calcification on some of the discs, but nothing unusual for an 8 1/2 year old dog. Zeke's back looked great on the X-rays. We're going to treat him with Predisinone and a muscle relaxan and see if that improves his situation.
Zora's reaction when I returned without Zeke was interesting. When I came through the door, Zora was in "protection" mode, barking at me. As soon as she saw it was me, she quieted down, but as I came up the stairs, Zora kept retreating backwards, until she got to Margie standing in the kitchen. When I called her to come to me, she did so, but was extremely submissive, almost slinking back towards me. After that she got up on her hind legs and began hugging my legs. She must have picked up that I was at the vet. After that, she went back to her business.
Hope the meds work! We are sending healing dachsie rays from Iowa, where we currently have sun a-plenty!
Sending bunches of rays Zeke's way....... :xfinger: that the meds do the trick !!!
Poor Zora ....she thought it was her turn
Keep us posted !
I missed this. Poor Zekie. Glad to hear his spine is looking a-okay, but hope he's out of pain soon.
This sounds a lot like Rowan's episode in November. We all thought she was having disc issues, but nothing showed up, she was put on pain, anti-inflamatory, and anti-nausea meds, and after finishing those and her 4 weeks of crate rest, she's back to her old self - err, I mean, her usual activities!
Rays for Zeke on the way to the east...
Zeke responded exceptionally well to the steroids. He is back to himself. Because dachshies are so stoic, and because physical ailments tend to gradually worsen, it's easy to miss the drop off in energy until they are in pain. Seeing Zeke back to himself made me realize how sore he probably was. I'm so glad to have my Zekey Doodle back.
I'm so sorry I miss this... I'm glad surgery was not in the books, and that the steroid is doing the job. Sending plenty of rayz and good thoughts for good measure!! :apls:
I haven't been on the board in a while and I missed this also. I am glad to hear that Zeke is responding favorably.
 We are soooo happy to hear this, David!! Those steroids are a wonder drug ~ for puppers and people!
That's just WIENERFUL news! I'm so glad that Zeke is being a Zekey Doodle again. :apls:
great news David, and its good to Zora was in protection mode in your absence.
roberta
Great news Dave!
It's exactly what we wanted to here.
Way to go Zeke!
