Title: Schnitzel's Still Shaking - !
Post by: dachsville on January 14, 2011, 11:47:04 AM
Well my little old girl isn't responding to the Gabapentin - she is still shaking.  Since she started on a low dose, the vet is upping it a bit.  So now she is on Methacarbomal (muscle relaxant), Tramadol (pain) and the Gabapentin (nerve pain).  All this is, of course, in addition to her Benazapril (heart med for grade 4 murmur).  That's a lot of meds for a 13+ year old, 14.8 lb. Doxgrl.  And all she does is run around like nothing is wrong with her!!  If it wasn't for the constant major shaking, you wouldn't think anything is wrong.  Just can't afford to take her to Denver for an MRI (over $1,000) and she has had all the other bloodwork and tests.....just can't figure this one out.  This is very frustrating and in this world of high technology, I wish someone would come up with a dog-language translation so they could just TELL US.  (I happen to have a boss who always HAS to have the latest technology....keeps my old mind going, anyway.)

Snowing today in Breckenridge so going to try and get my frustrated mind off this and go snowshoeing tomorrow.  It's really good exercise and so pretty to trek out into the forest.....and forget your troubles for a couple of hours......until you get home to a shaking puppy......

As you can see, Strudel is very worried:

Could it be a dachshund version of Parkinson's?   The lack of any secondary symptoms and the lack of response from the meds would lead me to believe that it is something neurological rather than physical.  My experience has been that Dachshunds do tend to get oddball neuroligcal ticks once they hit senior weinderdom.   Max-angel had the constantly dialated pupil, for instance.   In later years he was clearly senile.

ARgh I hate to hear that. So frustrating to not know just what is going on (and what is best to help!). I am glad she doesn't seem any worse for the wear other than the shaking but what a mystery. I hope you can figure it out soon as you say in this day and age it's amazing what they can do, and amazing what they can't!

STRUDEL OMG you have melted my heart into a puddle what a DOLL!    So nice of you to be worried about your sissie too.

You know, David, I thought the same thing - that's why the vet put her on Gabapentin.  That is a pain med specifically for neurological disorders, seizures or nerve pain stemming from the spinal column.  So far, unfortunately, nothing has worked.  This is very frustrating for us and the vet and I just can't put her through a lot of expensive testing right now, like an MRI.  She has to have an ultrasound soon to check on her heart so maybe that will show something.  Thanks for responding!

DeeDee, I thought you might like to see a Hallie-like Sista, Black & Tan Longhair doll baby.  Strudel has always been the love of the family and pure sweetness.  She needs a good brushing and paw-tuft trim tomorrow, along with a bunch of belly rubs.

I think I trimmed too much off her ears, but they were getting so much stuff in them.  Now she has that "puppy look".  How do you keep Hallie's ears so beautiful??

Is she shaking constantly, how about when she is asleep ? is it a little bit like a tremble or big shaking like when they shake water off ? Does she do it when you are watching how about if she does not know you are watching ?
We had a Cocker Spaniel one time would come to the back door and shake in the winter Grandma would let her in but she would also try it in the sumer time too.
Patches shakes once in awhile does not do it all time just off & on.
Sure hope you can find out what is going on Rays & Hugs to you both. Papbouv

No, it's a constant shaking ~ pretty strongly.  She does stop once in a blue moon when she is sleeping.  But then it starts right in again.

Have you asked about shakers disease, we had a jnr Ingrid that had it very badly.
Low grade versions they help with valium, Ingrid had it big time and nothing could be done for her.
Yes Miss Strudel does put me in mind of Ms H and my Ms A this the photo shopped hairy pair to-gether cunningly crafted by Dee

Ahhhh Roberta thanks for bringing that one back up if only we all could visit in person!

Eileen I really don't do anything to Hallie's ears except brush them once in a blue moon. Strudel really does have a puppy face she looks awesome!
I am praying you get to the bottom of Schnitzels' problem soon I wonder if it could be something like Ingrid had? I can imagine how stressful it is to watch it and not know what to do. There has to be somethign out there!!??!

Twins in the picture very nice. Awhile back I was watching Animal planet a show some Corgi puppies had been out in the yard got into something their symptoms were shaking took them in one at a time to the vets they determined they had got into something toxic???they were all given charcoal other meds.all but one did well in time but one had neurological damage they said he would always have the shakes. ? When Patches ate one of my Baclofen 10 mg muscle relaxers I did not know she ate it until I saw her doing the shaking looked like the shaking the Corgi pup was doing. I took her to the Animal ER they gave her the charcoal IV's kept her all night she stopped most of the shaking except the shakes once in awhile.Never found out about the shakes now asked the vet they said it should not be related ??? gave up trying to find out about the shakes only does it once in awhile. Plus have our heat in the ceiling so not sure if it might be because Patches is chilly on the floor.Sending more Rays & Hugs can't hurt hope you can find outsomething soon.Papbouv
