Title: What to feed fur kids for Thanksgiving dinner
Post by: Charlie on November 16, 2005, 04:36:38 PM
For past Thanksgiving Dinners I've always given Charlie a tiny bit of turkey and gravey, ensuring there are no bones in the meat.  This year I'm cooking a turducken which is a chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey.  Does anyone have any idea if the duck or chicken would hurt my doxie or Golden Retriever if they ate some of it, ensuring of course that no bones were in the meat?

How about cajun style jambalya dressing of which has crawfish and shrimp in it?

I'd say the chicken, turkey and duck would all be fine. I would probably stay clear of the jambalya. Maybe some mashed potatos and greenbeans instead??  :thumb:

WOW!  I've never heard of cooking a duck in a chicken in a turkey!  That is amazing!

I'd agree, stear the dogs clear of anything spicy.  Their tummies might not be feeling so good later!

The turducken should be fine.  As for the dressing I"d be wary of it if they haven't had spicy foods before.  Cajsa my goat dog (with food allergies) can eat veggie red beans and rice with no problems whatsoever.  It's actually one of her favorite foods.  I have strange babies, but I love them both - fur and hooman!

There is actually a Thanksgiving Dinner canned food and a Turducken Dinner canned food by Merrick.

Berman had the Grammy's Pot Pie once and wasn't too thrilled, then again, he is the pickiest eater in the world!

I may pick up the Thanksgiving Dinner above for Berman and Lucy.

Well, I'm not sure if it will upset his tummy or not, but at least you know it's safe for dogs.

Turducken would probably be fine as long as it's just a little bit.   Thanksgiving dinner specifically for dogs!  Interesting.  :thinik:

I agree it depends what your dogs are used to eating... I'd probably avoid the spicy and highly seasoned stuff if their normal diet is primarily dog food, and be cautious about the amount of fat and skin they get - I have heard the incidence of dogs brought to vets with pancreatitis increases significantly after Thanksgiving (people too, I'm sure!  ).  But I can't imagine a little taste of turducken would hurt them.

I think I would stay clear of all the above, sorry but that dinner sounds like pancreatitis in the making.

I have given my pupperz some turkey and turnip.  I would stay away from the spicy stuff tho.
We don't want any upset tummys!  :puke: (just looking at this smilie, upsets MY tummy)

I checked out your links, and Taffy and I checked out the pet store that sold these dinners.  The sales lady wanted to know if I had tried them before, and told me everyone who had had told her the doggies seemed to really like them.  I guess we will find out tomorrow.  I picked up the Thanksgiving dinner, the potpie and the cowboy dinner.  They had the venison and the buffalo, but we passed on those.

I've been feed her mostly Mighty dog canned, some science diet canned, Puriena little bits dry and just got science diet puppy food.  She seems to like anything resembling food, lol.  She hasn't turned her nose up at anything yet.

My boys have tried the Pot Pie and several others from Merrick.  They love them especially the Pot Pie.  And they do enjoy the ones with buffalo and venison.  Some of them look so good that I'd even eat them if need be.

The Merrick Dinners are very good. Gunner and Petunia will be getting a little bit of Deli turkey and a tiny bit of some sort of pie I have 3 different ones don't know whick pir right now. I also would stay away from anything spicy. If you have Pepcid I would give a little of that before the dinner.
