Title: It's been a long, long time
Post by: Jacqueline on November 20, 2010, 12:08:15 AM
I have been missing in action for a long time, but was glad to see I could still log in.  I also went from being Mom to one very spoiled rotten doxie to being Mom to four.  Taffy is going to be six years old - hard to believe!! - on Dec 11th.  We got her from our local animal control when she was 11 months old.  In February of 2005, I made an impulsive stop in at our Humane Society, and came home bearing a playmate....7 month old Daisy.  Taffy is a chocolate mini, and Daisy is a red and white Pie.  In 2007, we adopted Mindy, from a Texas rescue.  We couldn't arrange transport, so we jumped in the car and drove from Florida to Texas and back for her.   Long trip, and I had to cross some of the longest bridges in the country....one of my big phobias.   But she is well worth it.   She just turned 5 on October 23rd.  She is a lovely little black and tan.   Our baby is Molly, a tricolored black and white pie, weighing in at 8.6 pounds of total mischief.  She was 2 years old May 30th.  The three are minis, Daisy is a tweenie at 16 pounds.

Daisy is my special girl.  People don't think of Dachshunds being service animals, but she is mine, as well as being my very best Doxie friend and companion.  I have had to travel from Florida to St. Louis more than just a few times from Oct 2008 thru Oct 2009, because I was being treated for breast cancer.  I have to admit that I was one of those rare people who did not have problems with the chemo treatments, but those shots they give after the first six treatments.....those are some real treats, let me tell you.   They make your bones hurt something awful.   And I already have congenital arthritis that doesn't appreciate long car trips without breaks.   So getting out of the car after hours of driving was a challenge.  Daisy is a very strong dog.....doxies have to be, remember they burrow under the ground to get those nasty badgers, and her job was getting me up out of the car seat.  She not only did that, but helped me up the hills, across rough terrain, etc.  At night, she would sleep curled against my back, a warm and welcomed heating pad.  She helped me stay strong while being away from my home for so long.

I am definitely a survivor, in more ways than one, and my girls bring me joy every day.  They are worth their little weights in gold.

Well, HELLO!  And welcome back!
My you've been through it, but in the immortal words of Winston Churchill: "When you're going through hell, keep going!"
Our furkids sure help us out in so many ways.

So glad that you made it through the treatments and that Daisy is such a help to you.  I've had/have major health issues and Jeeves has definitely been of service--if only he could come to the hospital with me!
Be well and remember to laugh at those wonderful wieners....it really helps.  Melinda and Jeeves
