Title: doxie ramps??
Post by: lowriders on November 14, 2005, 09:40:16 PM
Well, after Baxter's first sign of back problems, we've decided to get ramps for our boys to get on the couch.  For those you with ramps, what kind do you like?  The kind that hooks under the cushion and is perpendicular to the couch?  Or the free standing kind that is typically put parallel to the couch?  Where's a good place to get one?  And does you doxie really use it?  I'm thinking it won't be hard to get them to use it on the way up, but I'm thinking they'll still just want to jump down.  Guess if they won't use it, I'll just have to teach them to, like I'd teach them a new trick!

WE don't have a ramp for the couch as it's low and generally we just pick Cajsa up and set her back down.  For the bed though we have a ramp that runs along the foot of the bed parallel to it.  We had to teach her to go up and down it with bites of her favorite treats.  It took a little while to get her used to it, but she does well.

We have the one from Dr. Foster and Smith at the foot of our bed also.

I think I asked Barb this once but never found the thread again to see her reply  :doah: I wondered what keeps the dog from jumping off the side of the ramp?  The only ramp I have for Hallie now is down the back steps to the yard and I have a 4 ft tall railing on either side. For the furniture I started with a ramp but now Sue has it  because Hallie just lept off the side of it. It's not a problem anymore because I have just taught her to not jump on the furniture by herself but I have always wondered if most doxies don't jump off like she does? Maybe I didn't take enough time training her to go clear down the ramp. I did worry too though that someone could knock on the door and she'd forget herself and leap right off.  :meme: Are the doxies that use ramps here, reliable in going all the way down? (I had a Hallie window installed at floor level so she can lay on her beds and look outside without having to jump up on anything...)

DD Dodgers List has some ramps with a low railing....

http://www.dodgerslist.com/  - click on "Purchase Dodger's Ramps" from the list on the left side to see the kinds they have.

We are going to have to do something as well ramp-wise.  John is thinking about what will fit best on our couch.  They don't get up on any other furniture.

I had a ramp custom made.  It has 3 "gates" on top - it can open seperately so I can use it either way I like.  The railings keep them from jumping of the side too
