Title: Patches in the DOG HOUSE
Post by: papbouv on October 21, 2010, 11:00:14 PM
I trained Patches not to go out the front door unless I tell her it is OK or so I thought every day the mail man comes she sits up & barks at him I wait until he leaves. I tell her wait I open the storm door and get the mail she has never once acted like she would go out the door.We live on a very busy street also have a big old Maple tree in the front yard which the squirrels play around the tease the Schnauzer dog next door terribly always was concerned if Patches got out she might take off after a Squirrel  get in the street and hit by a car.
Today Buddy was in the house he barks at the mail man something he never does Patches barked at him too I go to get the mail Patches takes off out the door after the mail man but sees the Schnauzer dog wants to play with him.One of the neighbors grabs Patches by the collar til I catch up to her. I carry her home put the pinch on her on a long line open the door so she goes running out the door again hits the end of the long line gives her self a good pinch.I tell her I did not say you can go out the door we may have to do this every day for a long time so it will sink in. Later I walked by the door opened it asked her if she wanted to go out she gave me a dirty look.
Hubby said I was being mean I said I was not just trying to keep her out of the street. Need to train some more I guess we have not worked on it in a long time so guess she forgot herself.Does anyone else have to work on not running out the door know Dachshunds are suppose to be stubborn but how often do you have to go over the training.?

We have a horrible time keeping Parker in the house. We actually lock the screen on the front door as people tend to open the screen door and knock on the storm door. When we open the door to see who is there, the screen door is still open and Parker runs out. He seems to think it's a game and will not come when we call him. We have tried being mean but he knows we can only control him if he has his leash on which he doesn't have on in the house. We do leash him in the house when we have guests. Therefore the message is if there is a leash he knows to behaves, no leash, no behave.
Our back doors lead into a fenced backyard. We always have the gates padlocked as we have a pool so nobody can just walk in. They have to wait for us to unlock the gate. I have heard of some people that use shock collars when the dog runs for it, put I think that is way to mean, and I don't believe a dog needs to be hurt to enforce good behaviour.

:wink3: It's a good idea to insist on the hooman going out the doorway (a portal to dogs) first and the dog(s) waiting until the hooman says, "Okay" before the pupper goes out.  When I let the Herd in or out they have to wait their turn and go through one at a time.

That is scary glad your neighbor had the precense of mind to hold her. I trained Hallie by having her sit with the leash on and telling her to stay and I'd always go out first. After she got that I'd open the door with something more exciting outside, and if she tried to go I'd hit the ground in front of her (right in the doorway) with a rolled up newspaper. That was enough for her she has not tried to go out without me saying it's OK for 9 years. I'd worry a little about letting her hit the end of a pinch with a doxie neck, like you said maybe just back up and leash work her at the door again.

I had the problem with the screen door in Tacoma when I lived there.  Luckily I had a fenced yard, but I wanted to smack people when they opened the door and knocked on the interior door.  Hello?  Do you hear the racket?  Shut the freaking door, so I can actually answer the knock!   :BangHead:

Well would rather have her get pinched than dead by getting run over by a car shock collar would also get the message across. I let them correct them self's with the pinch I'm just holding the leash. If I had one I would use it you can be nice all day long but if the go out the door on a busy street you have to do everything possible to keep them from killing their selves.May try the news paper but knowing Patches she would just go under the couch and she has never been hit by a newspaper here at this house. She may have at her breeders house I got her when she was 16 weeks old.

I don't leave my security door unlocked (stronger than a screen door without the total coverage) for that very reason.  They can just knock on my security door, thank you very much, and that way, I can keep a child gate between the dachsies and the front door, as I am in no mood to chase after one to four doglets!  I have to work on some things daily - my newest two must have "stubborn" tattooed somewhere on their doggynesses!

I am all for a pinch or a shock collar to correct something they are doing where they could hurt (or kill) themselves (or something else) if nothing else is reliable enough. It sounded like she was hitting the end of the leash so I was more concerned about the jerk on the neck putting her doxie back out, than the pinch.

Why do squirrels have to torment the dogs? You'd think they would just stay up in their trees and try to be quiet!  :thinik:

LOL Julia I'd love to see a photo of those tattoos!
