I took Ozzy to the vet just to rule out ear or gum infection as the cause of his bad breath. Teeth/gums are in great shape and there was no ear infection as well. The vet believes the cause of his occasional bad breath is that he licks his behind and possibly expresses his anal glands into his mouth. Not much we can do about that, except to try breath sprays, mints, or stuff that can be put into his water.
Other than that, the vet said Ozzy is very healthy, and we are taking very good care of him. I sometimes get worried over things like how long we have to leave him alone, are we feeding him right, are spending enough time with him, and on, and on, so it's nice to hear that we are doing OK.
Kind of personal, but... does Ozzy's breath have a fishy odor? Duchie is 10 and has some major breath issues. Her teeth are OK - due for regular scheduled dental, but nothing stuck in or around teeth or gums, no decomposing stuff. I wonder if her breath is anal-related (not a pleasant thought, but it could be the case...) on the rare occasions her anals have given her trouble they have been fishy smelling. :dontknow:
thanks for the insight, and tell Ozzy I promise not to tell.... this is kinda personal!
Lol, I can see poor Ozzy going past the monitor, seeing that written there and going. "HEY!!"
Tell him he's a sweetie, even if his breath doesn't prove it.
I bought some liquid stuff where you put a teaspoon of it into 8 oz of water in the water bowl. I also bought some chewable "breath mints." Both are alleged to not only improve breath, but to help in keeping gums and teeth healthy.
Amy came home Saturday and immediately noticed Ozzy's breath was much better, not to mention his teeth are looking whiter. Oz seems to get along well with the new stuff.
Hopefully we are through with the breath that would make the feathers fall off a buzzard!
