Title: Ailing dog? NEVER GIVE UP
Post by: SNKSMOMSUE on October 13, 2010, 06:28:59 PM
As I sit here with King Sol on my lap very methodically ripping the stuffing out of a toy (squeakers are evil and must be punished) I keep thinking back to Sunday when I was SURE we would have to put Sol down.  If any of you could have seen his poor body heave with each breath, his sad eyes - and the x-ray of his enlarged heart with all the fluid around it I know you would have been trying to prepare me for the worst.  We have not been back to the vet yet, but I KNOW that they are going to be amazed at his recovery.  Although he will be on medication the rest of his life, it is not his time to leave us yet.

The moral of my post is - as hard as it is to stay positive, and as much as we don't like to set our expectations too high for fear of disappointment - our faithful companions need our faith.  If Sol pulled through this with my negative vibes - imagine how much better he would have gotten and FASTER had I trusted in him. At my darkest moment I looked in his eyes, thinking I would see "Its ok mom, I've had a great life" - but instead I saw "This is so annoying - take me home so I can get better".

I can't thank you all enough for your prayers and rays.  King Sol is not just the King - he is the first dog I have ever had in my life.  And for those of you who didn't know me "back when" - Jim gave me Sol for Christmas as a consolation prize for not being able to have children after many years and heartbreak of trying.  He truly is my baby.

Oh, and in case you don't know the "how I picked my dog" story for King Sol - we agreed to get a dachshund and watched the paper faithfully for puppies for sale near us.  The ad said there were two red girl doxies and two boy doxies left.  I was adamant I wanted the red girl puppy.  When we got to the breeder - there were 6 other puppies of another breed (I forgot which, something little like shitzu).  So we walk in, and 9 puppies come racing to us.  The little red girls were adorable!  I was going to call her Shauncey.  Notice I said 9 puppies came running......come to look up and there on the lazy boy recliner is this little black and tan doxie looking at us like "HA - I race for  no one.  You wanna see me YOU come HERE".  And the rest folks, is history.

Long live the King.

Dachshunds, particularly the seniors, have a way of defying logic and bouncing back when one thinks a rendezvous with the Bridge is imminent.  It is called the old age roller coaster, and it seems to happen to all dachsies once the get to that 13 year old range.   Sounds like Sol had his first trip.   Max-angel had numerous ups and downs, until his final one at 17 years, 7 months.   The final chapter of his life opened up a new chapter for Zeke and Zora.  Unbeknownst to me, Yamisi was in the process of trying to find the Zs a new home after her infant son was asthmatic when Max passed.   While Margie and I really didn't want to jump back into dog ownership so soon after Max's passing, we knew we couldn't let this pair go to anyone.   Little did we know how vital a role the Zs, with Zeke in particular would play in Jessica's life and development.

Good to hear Sol is continuing in his recovery.  Hilde and I will keep sending healing rays your way, and hopfully he will keep on a steady path of recovery.

*sniff* at Sol's gotcha story...I had never heard that before !

And Sue, you are totally right - we have to trust in them and also trust in ourselves.  Many here have had to make the decision to let their loved one go.  I for one have not, and fear the day.  I pray that I know the right answer.  Until that time comes, I will treat each day as their last, with all the love my heart can muster and soft snuggles to let them know they are so special to me. And a treat each time Rudy barks for one

All Hail King Sol....Looooong Live the King !!!!
