Title: King Sol Update
Post by: SNKSMOMSUE on October 10, 2010, 07:24:10 AM
Took the boys to get their manicures today, and Sol freaked out more than usual.  He always pants and salivates all over the place but this time he wouldn't stop.  Nails were done around 11 yesterday, and by 9 pm he was still heaving and panting.  Finally gave in and took him to the emergency vet. X-rays show his heart is about 3 times the size it should be - and there is a lot of fluid surrounding it.  We have 3 meds - two of which he will be on for the rest of his life, and he is on bed rest.  I am upset about his condition because it really seems to have hit fast - either that or I am a horrible dog mom and I missed something, and also because he won't eat.  I can't get him to eat a thing, which means no pills either.
Please keep the King in your prayers.  13 is a long life, and he's been treated like royalty each and every day.  Hopefully this is something we can get under control and he can lead a content life for a few years yet.

It came on this fast and with the same symptoms for Bosco the Doberman.
Keep trying any food he will eat. It took a while for them to get him eating regularly too.

Major rays are coming your way for King Sol and for you from Washington!!  You are not a bad dog mom.....being seniors, and even with young dogs, ailments can come on fast with no early signs.  Keep trying to get him to eat something little with the pill in it.  If the King won't eat, you may need to get something soft (like Stage 1 Baby Food.....our house prefers the Chicken or Turkey), put the pill in a mound, use your finger, pry his mouth open and place food with pill on his tongue half way back.  When I've had to do that with all our boys (now and the angels), they would swallow the food and pill.  A little tough love when we need to get them to take their medicine.

We will send positive thoughts and rays to you!!  Keep us posted!   Hugs, Dee and the gang

Oh I'm so sorry Sue, I didn't realize the King was 13 already boy does time fly. My friends had an older girl who had a very enlarged heart and the meds helped her along for a number of years. I agree with Dee, I have done the same thing with my dogchildren and catchildren, pill in babyfood as far in the mouth as I could easily get it then gently hold their muzzle shut and tip their head up til they swallowed. You are NOTa bad dog mom, sometimes things don't present until far along and sometimes they are able to hide it to a point. Many prayers and rays coming to you and Sol keep us posted.

Title: Sol - Sunday Night
Post by: SNKSMOMSUE on October 10, 2010, 06:38:05 PM
Well, we went back to the vet this afternoon because Sol was still panting heavily and he had this glassy look in his eyes.  Also would NOT eat anything - even steak.  So we were sitting on the couch at the vet, and he STOPPED PANTING.  Laid down and went to sleep like all was well!   So we came home, he napped some more - I managed to get his meds in him using Braunshwager and he was great for a couple hours - but now he just threw up all his food and the meds...hope some got in his system.

Thank you all for rays - King Sol is one of a kind, when its time to pass on the crown he will let me know.  In the mean time, he officially declares that if he is unwell - TREATS ALL AROUND!!!!!

p.s.  SBD said he's taking care of the food and treats that King Sol won't eat, so no worries!

Augh this is the high price we pay for the privilege of having and loving these precious souls. But worth it. They do put you on a roller coaster ride, hang in there 3 vets in 1 day told me it was time to put my Fred Dane down once, I knew in my heart it wasn't and he rallied and had 9 more good months. They can do amazing things. Prayers and rays to you and the King.

Hilde and I are passing along some nice warm southern comfort and healing rays for your Solomon.  I lost my Solomon almost 2 years ago when he was just 11 and he was a special boy, too.    for King Sol to get better fast.
