Title: Max P. almost gives his mom a heart attack!
Post by: 4pacmom on October 02, 2010, 05:36:06 PM
Max P. has been sleeping in the living room on his doggy bed instead of in the big bed with me and the girls for the last year or so.  Max, now being 13, has cataracts so is almost blind and has suffered some hearing loss.  A few mornings ago, I let the girls out of the bedroom for our morning trip outside and they ran past Max on the dog bed.  Max did not move.  I called to him.  He did not move.  I nudged the bed with my foot.  He did not move.  My heart was in my throat.  I leaned down to feel if he was cold and the minute I touched him he jumped like he had received a jolt of electricity, which made me jump as well.  I just knew that he had taken his final nap.  I am so happy that was not the case.  He really did give me a scare.

Max you can't scare your mom like that.  We had a cat who used to like to sleep under the covers and one night I kicked her and she didn't move, not even a shove with my hand did the trick, so I threw back the covers and boy you never heard so much foul language coming from a kitty.  Needless to say she never slept that far under the covers again.

Max, you are a grand old man.  Maddie did the same thing a few times in her last 3 months.  I think it was because she was so deaf she just didn't hear me.  Scared me a coupla times though.

Sarge is really getting into the deep sleeps also........there have been many times, that I look/stare at him to make sure he is still breathing because he is in such a deep sleep.  Duggie will even go over and nudge him when I say it's time to go out and Sarge doesn't move...the nudge from Duggie usually works.

I know Twinkie still slept with me in the big bed until I lost her, but from time to time she would get up and go get a drink and given she was such a deprived doggy(I think at that point I had  only  6 beds for her in my 2 bedroom house!!) Well one nite she did not come back and I went to look for her, in case she needed to go outside. She was in the living room, laying in one of the beds, with her head sort of hanging over the side a little.  She seemed to be ok and I went back to bed. then went back out a couple hours later to see what she was doing. I swear her head was hanging over the side in a really weird position.  She was also mostly blind and deaf too.  But due to a heart problem she was on a high blood pressure med and her skin often was not that warm!  I touched her ear, it was of course cold like it normally was.  Then I nudged her shoulder(thankfully that was not real cold.  Then I got scared cuz she was still not moving at all.  I don't think she woke up until I picked her up out of the bed, and then it was like..."Huh, why I am in the air?"!!!!!

I was so upset she might have passed all alone in the living room!  Better than being totally home alone but still in my mind alone!!

Another time she scared the H out of me because one nite I could not find her. She normally had this favorite spot on the bottom of the bed, on the side by the wall. She was not there. I got up and looked in all the other rooms, no Twinkie!! I touched all over on all the blankies on the bed(she had sort of a nest of blankies she slept on, in or under.) Still no twinkie. I knew she could not get under the bed cuz its so low. But I could hear something. So then I threw all the bedding off the bed, and noticed when I yanked the last pillow off(that was against the wall way up by me.....right up to the top of the bed)....there were a couple paws sticking up. They were between the bed and the wall. The air mattress had shifted a tiny bit away from the wall, and somehow she got down in there and managed to crawl up to the top still on her back!! Mind you there was a pillow and several blankies on top of her!  She was in there so snug I had a heck of a time getting her out of there!! After that I made sure all the time the mattress had not shifted away. Luckily the platform under the air mattress was still there to block her from falling very far.  I'm guessing since she was deaf by then, she did not think to park or anything.

Ahhh Nikki...I am going through the same thing with Brandy AND Rudy !!!  Bran is 14 1/2 and sleeps like......*gulp* the dead.  She does the very same thing that Max does when I touch her !!!  Rudy sleeps so soundly these days..... except for when the words food or treat are uttered....he is up like a shot !!!!

Glad Maxie is hanging in there !

Don't say anything to His Studliness, but . . .

He also sleeps, let's say, VERY SOUNDLY! :sleepy2:  BUT at 15.5, I figure he's entitled.

My favorite is when he is sound asleep under the covers and something finally registers and he yips IN HIS SLEEP!  The comforter puffs up and down as he yips!  My roommate, Ann, says, "Too late, Guinness, I've already stolen the computer!"

Zack gets up a couple of times a night the last time being about 4am.  Then he sleeps really soundly and doesn't budge when you try to wake him about 10am.  He has scared me too.  Gretel did that and so did Zeke and Zelda too.  Zena (the youngster) is up as soon as you move.  :angel4:

we used to have a lot of those moments in Emma's later years. Amy however snores louder when she sleeps sound and Oliver breaths deeply.
